We don't often celebrate our anniversary with too much fanfare, but this year we thought we'd go to a movie and have dinner at Chili's afterwards.
We went to the Pearlridge Shopping Center to see Into the Woods. I didn't really know the story line, but tried to explain as much as we knew to mom before the movie started. We figured that mom would just enjoy the music.
Although the actors did very well and had lovely voices, we're sorry to say we didn't enjoy the movie very much. It was okay.
We then walked across to Chili's. I chose mom's dish and asked if I could substitute the fries for broccoli on my dish. I ordered an ice tea and then Art placed his order.
When the meals came, I realized that I actually forgot to order my own dish!
Our server, Angelo apologized and brought me a free cup of soup while I waited for my half rack of baby back ribs. I told him it was my fault entirely, but he insisted on me having the soup anyway.
Would you believe they now have these little computers at the table where you can get your bill, choose what percentage of tip you want to leave and pay with your charge card right there?
As we were sitting there, we got text messages from our son and daughter wishing us a happy anniversary.
Angelo had asked us earlier if we were celebrating something and we told him it was our 42nd wedding anniversary.
What a surprise! He brought this rather large glass of ice cream sundae for us to all share. Mom was in heaven!
Angelo asked us what the secret was for a long marriage. Art and I looked at each other and Angelo asked, "Love?"
I told him, "Compromise." I should have added communication and humor....lots of humor.
As we were leaving Chili's Art said, "You know what? This was one of our best anniversary celebrations yet."
We all left the restaurant smiling, ready for Year #43.
What do you think is the secret to longevity in a relationship?

I think your first reaction was great. Marriage is so much about compromise, giving in when it really doesn't matter a lot that you are right! Communication and a sense of humor just add to the success. Happy Anniversary, Kay.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary Art and Kay! Wishing you many more happy healthy ones. I love how you came up with 'compromise, so true.
ReplyDeleteYou are all such healthy and happy people, it makes me smile to see those pictures of your anniversary. Angelo is rather dishy! And your mom looks simply wonderful. That ice cream would have made me happy, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary to a lovely couple!!
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely way to celebrate. congratulations!!! I think, compromise is a good word,
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary to you and Art
ReplyDeletealso I like the little computer idea. I always hate waiting for the bill and then waiting for it to come back
Happy 42nd Wedding Anniversary! Ed T
ReplyDeleteHi Ed! Thanks a bunch!
DeleteWishing you and Art a very Happy Anniversary and may there be many more!! What's it take?? Lots of love, patience and a terrific sense of humor!!
ReplyDeleteHonest communication. Yes, humor is important, but communication sure helps.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to both of you on number 42.
Mazal tov, Art and Kay. Angelo is a cutie; you could have kept love in there for his question. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd add trust.
Sounds like a very nice #42 celebration. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteI would say that a good marriage is based on knowing how to "dance." One must know when to lead and when to follow. The couple has to keep "dancing" even at times when they would rather not. They must learn new routines, integrating the old steps with the new. The music may change tempo, but the couple adapts their steps and rhythm. As Terry and I say, "let's dance." It's good for the marriage.
Oh my! I really love this! This is so perfect, Delaine!
DeleteCongratulations, 42 years is certainly a testament to love, compromise, communication and humour. I think I'd add tolerance too!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a clue. After 51 years of marriage. Happy Anniversary to you and Art!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary to you both! I think "love, compromise and humor" is a pretty good description of what makes a marriage work.
ReplyDeletecommitment to work through the problems...happy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteThe ability to forgive and move on.
ReplyDeleteHappy 42nd. You two are such a neat couple You just fit. .Angelo is adorable and a really cool waiter.
ReplyDeleteI would put humor first for it can deflate possible tension but also just adds delight to life. Add mutual respect and I'd be good to go.
Oh yes! Without mutual respect, you cannot have a relationship.
DeleteEverything you said. Happy anniversary.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary from Poland.
ReplyDeletewine.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! It would keep us mellow, that's for sure.
DeleteWell, one has to BE a person like you & Art,
ReplyDeletethen has to meet another person like you or Art. Simple!!!!!

DeleteHappy anniversary! Time passes quickly when you're having fun! You Mom hasa a million dollar smile.
ReplyDeleteShe said, "Thank you" Red.
DeleteHappy Anniversary to you and Art! Warm regards from Germany.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 42nd!!! What a lovely celebration--I love that you and Art include Aunty on your special day. Hugs, Holly
ReplyDeleteWhen we first moved to Hawaii mom would enryo and say that we should go out on our own. We would insist and now she really looks forward to celebrating anything and everything with us.
DeleteHappy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteI also do not like "Into The Woods". I just don't understand why everyone is so crazy about Sondheim, but hey, don't ask me, I don't understand why everyone sings the songs from "Frozen" either.
What is the secret to a long marriage? Hmm....being married to anyone named KAY, of course! HA HA
Art loved your last sentence. His sister has been married even longer and her name is Kay too. LOL
DeleteUmmm.... Every little girl knows all the lyrics and I could sing "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" for you since I heard it so much over the summer.
Happy Anniversary! Table card readers are common in some parts of Europe. We haven't found any here yet.
ReplyDeleteI think the Golden Rule applies to marriage as much as it does to friendship.
Mutual respect, compromise and honoring commitment. Love only gets you there it doesn't keep you there. Congratulations on 42 years!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a great celebration. Happy Anniversary, and hope you have many more.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY ANNIVERSARY ART AND KAY!! As someone who has been married 15 days, I find this inspiring :)
ReplyDeleteI found myself smiling while reading this post. So cute you guys!
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary. This is a fun post. We are at 33 this year, so behind you, but this is #2 or #3 for us, and longer than we've ever been with anyone else.
ReplyDeleteThe secret to a happy marriage? As Mage says...humor. Seriously, tho, David is 13 years older but I am an oldest child who looked after and like Tina Fey was a 'bossy pants" with my younger sibs. David is a youngest child and was used to older and bossy siblings growing up. These days, we are like those siblings. Mostly we like it like that, though sometimes one or the other of us wants the other one to be the grown-up.
David's first and failed marriage was to a younger child, and my failed marriages were to older children.
Statistically speaking (as a former sociologist) marriages tend to last when people marry someone of the opposite birth order.
I do believe birth order helps. Art was the younger of two and I was the older of two. Even his sister's name is Kay so he didn't need to learn a new name. But you know what? He can be bossy too.
DeleteIsn't this wonderful! Happy Anniversary!!!!! You have so much fun. We haven't been to a theatre in ages. Just can't stand most of them.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and Happy Anniversary! It sounded like a wonderful one. Gregg told me a while ago that McDonalds in Chicago has just started having those machines at the table, and another couple of hundred of their restaurants will be getting them initially. He had also read an article about Chili's. Next December will be our 40th wedding anniversary. We are planning a very special trip and have already booked our hotel, so excited!
