I want to applaud @POTUS for taking another step toward reducing gun violence and making our communities safer. This Executive Order will increase the number of background checks conducted before a firearm sale takes place. #endgunviolence
The EO will also keep more guns out of dangerous hands by increasing the effective use of “red flag” laws, strengthening efforts to hold the gun industry accountable, and accelerating law enforcement efforts to identify and apprehend the shooters menacing our communities.
Baltimore has something to say about tackling the issue of gun violence. In 2022, we seized more guns than in any other year since 2014. Notably, 2600 weapons were seized, including 485 ghost guns. Homicides are down 23% and non-fatal shootings are down 26% year over year.
Our comprehensive approach to #PublicSafety is the reason for these results. Through our partnerships with BPD and MONSE, the Community Violence Intervention Ecosystem – GVRS and CVI – has saved lives, and we will continue to do all we can to make our communities safer.

Baltimore is the only place I have ever called home. All of us know that while we are one city, there are really two Baltimores. #BaltimoreCanBmore
There is the Baltimore that everyone knows and loves which includes the Harbor and Harbor East and Mt. Washington. And there is the forgotten Baltimore where citizens struggle to even have their existence recognized. I come from the forgotten Baltimore.
There is no doubt about it, Baltimore has been in a rough spot but if anybody knows anything about Baltimore they know we don’t quit. Even in the face of the slimmest odds, we find a way to push through to the other side.
Growing up in Park Heights, I unfortunately have seen people get shot, encountered bodies, and everything else bad that too many Baltimoreans have to endure. However, it wasn't until I moved to my quiet street in Northeast Baltimore that I became the victim of a violent crime.
On the night of Sept 21st 2009 I was robbed at gun point by two young men as I walked Sir Charles. Until yesterday I had never spoken publicly about that incident and only spoke of it privately to a few. bit.ly/2Lrdkh4
The young men who robbed me were 16. At the time, I was extremely angry, but I have long since forgiven him. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit with Mr. Golphin and have a conversation about our issues. Yesterday I testified on his behalf that his sentence should he modified.
