At this stage the #mentor and #mentee think about themselves and what they want to give and receive in this important relationship.

Questions addressed are: where you've come from, where you are now, and where you want to go next. #HRwithEM
What vital lessons have you learned up to now? What's your vision for the rest of your life? What can you offer as a mentor? How could you help others excel?

Once you know yourself a little better and what you have to offer, you're ready to move into the next phase of the relationship.

2. Building Relationship/Negotiating Agreement

The first part of this phase is getting to know one another in order to build trust. It's important to take plenty of time required to develop a strong relationship.

Be sure to exchange contact information such as email addresses and phone numbers. Ask your partner about when it's all right to call him/her. Talk about how soon you normally can expect a reply from each other.

SCHEDULE - discuss the probable length of your formal partnership.

MEETING LOGISTICS - decide when and where you will meet.

EXPECTATIONS- explore roles you picture for each of you. Do you want to be more of a sounding board than a teacher?Do you and your mentee favour a teaching or coaching role for you? Would you like to be an accountability partner?

This is the longest phase of the mentoring relationship. Work with your mentee to choose a maximum of three (3) goals/objectives at a time to work on in your relationship.

These mentee development objectives can focus on skill development, knowledge gain, or attitude change.

To maintain momentum in your partnership, try a number of ideas to keep the relationship interesting, productive, and mutually beneficial e.g. plan to attend a special activity (such as a conference) later in the partnership.

4. Ending Formal Relationship

Rather than letting a relationship continue and have no focus or letting it disintegrate from lack of attention, a formal ending will help both of you with this important transition.

You can have a conversation like this: "We only have three months in our formal mentoring partnership. What else do we need to accomplish?"
