In Situ Polyaniline Film Formation Using Ferric Chloride as an Oxidant

ABSTRACT: In situ polyaniline (PANI) films were grown from an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution ... more ABSTRACT: In situ polyaniline (PANI) films were grown from an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution on glass substrates via the chemical oxidation of aniline using hydrated ferric chloride, FeCl3.6H2O (FC). The effect of ini-tial molar ratios of FC/aniline on the yield of PANI films was monitored using the quartz crystal microbalance tech-nique. The morphology of the resultant polymer film and powder was examined using scanning electron micros-copy. It was found that the film possesses a porous char-acter; however, the polymer powder consists of small particles with interconnected nanofibers. The polymer powder formed in the bulk was characterized using the energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, the X-ray diffraction, and the thermal gravimetric analysis. A comparison between the PANI produced from FC and ammonium peroxydisulfate was considered and discussed. VC 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Recent advances in the polymer grafting methods allow the introduction of polymers with well controlled composition, structure and molecular weight onto the surface of CB. In addition, modification by functional polymers provides a powerful impetus to extend the applications of polymer-CB composites such as sensitive materials. This review focuses on the development of these grafting polymerization methods and some novel applications of polymer grafted CB.

Considering the great impact of a material's surface area on adsorption processes, hollow nan... more Considering the great impact of a material's surface area on adsorption processes, hollow nanotube magnetic zinc oxide with a favorable surface area of 78.39 m²/g was fabricated with the assistance of microwave technology in the presence of poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) as a stabilizing agent followed by sonic precipitation of magnetite nano-particles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs identified the nanotubes' morphology in the synthesized material with an average aspect ratio of 3. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis verified the combination of magnetite material with the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO in the prepared material. The immobilization of magnetite nanoparticles on to ZnO was confirmed using vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM).
