In the case of Africa, the need to promote entrepreneurial universities has been advanced as the only way to enable these institutions of higher learning to achieve their set visions and missions. In the 21st century, universities in Africa have been faced with extreme financial austerity and management crisis; this has put into question the quality of programmes being offered. In addition, it has led to invisible and visible brain drain and brain mobility. This paper interrogates the role of entrepreneurship as a reform agenda for universities in Africa. The guiding argument is that there is need to re-evaluate the creation of entrepreneurial universities as a way of enabling them attain their core functions of teaching, research and service. This is important in lieu of the fact that some policy makers think that entrepreneurial universities will reduce the role of the state in the financing of universities in Africa.

Design/methodology/approach – An integrative review of literature was conducted and multiple electronic databases were searched to find the relevant resources. Using the content analysis technique, the literature was reviewed and thematically organized. Findings – Seven major themes emerged through the process of content analysis on the body of the reviewed literature. The themes which described the presence of EI-related research within the field of HRD, included: Conceptual connections between EI and HRD; various aspects of EI training and development; the strengths and weaknesses of different EI measurement tools; EI profiles of individuals across various careers; the influence of context in the interpretation of EI; the role of EI in productive interpersonal interactions; and, finally, the impact of EI in leadership development and performance. Research limitations/implications – The search for this review was limited to peer-reviewed published EI-related articles which contained the keywords “human resource development” or “HRD”. While the field of HRD encompasses a wide variety of areas, this study has the limitation of excluding other relevant articles that did not contain the key terms. Originality/value – The originality of this study lies in its focus on EI and developing human resources. It argues that EI is a legitimate organization development intervention that can be effectively utilized to improve performance at individual, group, process and organizational levels.

The first is to examine the need for e-learning in Africa's institutions of higher learning. The second is to discuss the policy, institutional, pedagogical, copyright, and quality assurance issues that need to be addressed. The third is to critically examine the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning in African universities. The fourth is to provide a practical partnership model for design and successful delivery of e-learning programmes. To achieve these objectives, a critical analysis of relevant literature and case studies was conducted. The literature search included computerized search of accessible and available material on e-learning in Africa and world over, manual search of existing literature, and communication with key subject matter experts to locate published and unpublished studies. The results of the study show that e-learning has a future in Africa's universities and that there is need to build e-learning programmes based on genuine partnerships from other successful partners within and without Africa.

Unrecorded alcohol, alcohol that is purchased by means which precludes regulation, represents a substantial proportion of the alcohol consumed in East Africa. In Kenya, homebrew also known as traditional brew, has been linked to several fatalities and hospitalizations. Previously banned, the Kenyan government recently legalized homebrew in an effort to regulate and reduce its harm. Despite legalization, however, homebrew continues to be endemic. In this paper, we examine the scope and harm associated with unrecorded alcohol in Kenya, and discuss current policies and interventions aimed at reducing production and consumption of unrecorded alcohol in the Kenyan context that reflect its culture, politics, environment and resources.

Thus, collection of data and analysis is recommended if the model and applicable theory are to be developed to the fullest extent possible. Accordingly, the authors provide a working model that illustrates the basis for investigating the conceptualized relationship among work climate relationships, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, turnover intentions and/or retention, crash rates, and residual costs. Limited empirical evidence exists that correlates a combination of these factors. In addition, a diminished level of organizational commitment may affect truckload drivers’ attitude and/or focus while operating these very large trucks and as a result lead to an increase in crashes. Injuries, fatalities, and accident costs are reviewed as evidence of the magnitude and consequences of truckload crashes. The conceptual model advanced in this study emphasizes the essential need for a fully developed and empirically proven model and includes propositions to examine the strength and direction of relationships among important constructs, processes, practices, demographic, and environmental variables. Suggestions for further research based on the literature reviewed are discussed.

It is therefore beneficial to examine the views and perspectives of researchers, who view online courses as indispensable in modern educational systems and have contributed useful strategies and ideas of creating engaging online classes. The purpose of this study was to establish factors identified in previous studies that positively affect learners' engagement in virtual learning environments. The focus of the literature review was to highlight teacher presence and teacher immediacy in online class settings. Both hard copy and online searches generated relevant articles depicting various online class engagement strategies. The findings of the study suggest that teaching presence and teaching immediacy can influence learners' cognitive and affective learning experiences. The paper has implications for professional education in online teaching and learning and for educators in general. The authors identify future research areas that should contribute to the progression of the field of online learning literature in terms of teacher presence and teacher immediacy.

The technique of e-learning discussed in this book-simulations-should be of great interest to human resource development (HRD) professionals and leaders who care about learning. Simulations and the Future of Learning: An Innovative and Perhaps Revolutionary Approach to E-Learning is interesting, well written, witty, and thought provoking. It is a visionary and compelling book. The simulation technique of e-learning is presented in a creative story format. The story' s "plot" follows the idea that simulations allow training to take place under a "realistic" yet controlled and safe environment. For example, expensive and potentially dangerous military decisions are made and implemented virtually before real action is taken. The simulation approach described by Aldrich promotes action learning, because the learner is directly involved. In addition, the learner is in direct control of his or her learning. Using the simulation technique, the learner is able to experience and enjoy the learning process. "Simulations are coming of age. And this book shows you why and how to look at and understand simulations to help you become an effective consumer, deployer, user, or producer" (Aldrich, 2003, p. 9).

This paper examines the struggle for livelihood in the matatu industry and the resultant problems of conditions of work, regulation and road safety. The results reveal that there are many financial expectations by a wide range of stakeholders in the matatu industry. This has led to unsatisfactory and extremely difficult conditions of work for matatu workers. Regulation of the sector is also a contested field of competing socioeconomic interests. The resultant involvement of the matatu in road crashes has to be seen against this background: the struggle for livelihood by a wide range of stakeholders, extremely difficult working conditions and a hotly contested field of control. The overall recommendation is that the Government of Kenya alone cannot tackle the problem of road traffic injuries associated with the matatu. Passengers, vehicle owners, policemen, insurance firms, banks, vehicle importers and the travelling passengers have a role to play in improving road safety in the matatu industry.

Thus, the interpretations are limited to the seven small‐size business enterprises studied.Practical implicationsCertain types of enterprises form learning cultures conducive to organizational learning readiness more than do others. Also, seasoned employees may have developed a keen sense for detecting deficiencies within the learning infrastructure.Originality/valueThis study focused on variables not previously studied in small‐size business enterprises that explain organizational learning readiness. Thus, the results of this study will benefit the small‐size business entrepreneur interested in building a learning culture.

Consequently, organizations have begun to adopt a continuous learning philosophy which has resulted in a rise in both formal and informal learning. As social media penetrates our everyday lives, organizations and human resource development professionals are looking at how to leverage social media tools to enhance workplace learning and development. Using such tools also fits in with current initiatives to move learning to a more employee-centered learning. This chapter explores a number of social media tools that can be used to enhance workplace learning and development. First, social media definitions in the workplace context are provided and discussed. This is followed by a discussion on challenges associated with the use of social media for workplace learning and development. A framework of social media effectiveness, grounded in the learning and training processes, is propsed in the chapter.
