Landsat ETM-7 satellite data were used and band-5 was found as the most suitable band in automatic delineation. The automatic lineament extraction process was carried out with LINE module of PCI Geomatica V9.1 based on automatic detection algorithms (canny algorithms). The comparison of the automatic lineament extraction and the published fault maps of the area in terms of total length, number of lineaments and directions. The number and the total length of the lineaments using automatic method were found to be more than the number and the total length of the faults in the fault map. The directional analysis of the automatic lineament map was done with the reference of fault map of the area and the structure features measured in the field.

The pixel distribution of edges produced from band 5 was the better compared with other images and the matching edge lines-true fault lines percentage of coloured edge image produced from band 5 was 75.69% as a highest matching percentage compared with other percentages. 34 linear features were mapped from coloured edge image of the band 5 in the study area, and identified as new faults. This leads to updating and revising existing fault map of the study area. The trends analysis of structural linear features shows the major trends in the NW-SE and NE-SW, respectively. The structural analysis shows the NW-SE was the direction of the tensional deformation acted in the area. The NW-SE and NE-SW linear features seem to be normal and reverse faults respectively, while the N-S and E-W linear features were shear fractures (strike slip faults). Moreover, two fault zones were observed such as Mawasit and Turbah Fault Zones with the NW-SE and NE-SW strikes directions and NW and SE dips directions, respectively. These fault zones resulted from Gulf of Aden and Red Sea Active Rifting Systems effects.

GIS and remote sensing data for allowing detection of structural features, such as faults, offer ... more GIS and remote sensing data for allowing detection of structural features, such as faults, offer opportunities for improving mapping and identifying the areas that are likely to be locations of faulting areas. Landsat ETM-7 satellite data images were used and band-5 was found as the most suitable band for lineament delineation, based on the ability to identify geological features. Four contributing factors, namely, drainage patterns, faults (previously mapped), lineaments, and lithological contacts layers, were parameters used in this study to produce a fault potential prediction map using the overlay model techniques. The potential map (fault susceptibility map) classifies the study area into five potential zones, namely, very low, low, moderate, high, and very high potential. The areas covered by moderate to the highest potential zones were considered as fault segments (fault lines) in the area. The comparison of the potential map and the published fault map by using GIS matching techniques shows that 75 fault segments (fault lines) in the potential map were not properly identified in the study area. The correlation between fault segments and faults data collected from field work stations shows that there were 39 fault segments which may represent new faults in the area being identified. The presence of these faults is not known from the literature; this leads to updating and revising of existing geological map of the study area.

This data set provided different spatial resolution (30 m for Landsat TM to 10 m for SPOT-5). Several commercial softwares are developed to deal with the automatic linear features extraction. PCI Geomatica software is used for lineaments extraction from Landsat TM and SPOT data under the default parameters. The extracted lineaments of landsat-5 and SPOT-5 bands show different length and patterns of the lineaments whereas these patterns do not resemble exactly a fault system in the area. The NIR bands produced higher lineaments number (frequency) compared with VIS, SWIR and TIR bands. The main orientations of the extracted lineaments of most Landsat and SPOT bands are NW-SE, N-S, E-W and NE-SW. These orientations are similar to fault orientations. Lineaments of some other bands have individual orientations.

The image can enhance and identify lineaments at different sets. Lineaments were extracted from slope image are shown to have four sets of lineament systems, the first system of lineaments with azimuth orientation of N45<W is dominant in the area, the second, third and fourth lineament systems with azimuth orientations of N-S, N 90< E and N 45< E are subdominant in the study area. The total length of lineaments is 2139 Km and the number of lineaments is 782. In this study, a large number of lineaments were compared to the structures depicted on the geologic map of the area, and to field observations. A positive correlation between data derived form these different sources supports the above mentioned orientations of lineaments. The accuracy of lineament map is computed by using GIS overlay technique that determines where the lineaments and faults are matched. Total length of intersection is calculated to be 325.65 Km, this is 31.4 % of the faults identified in the area which also defines the accuracy of the lineament map prepared in this study for the whole area.
