Philip Leong received the B.Sc., B.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Sydney. In 1993 he was a consultant to ST Microelectronics in Milan, Italy working on advanced flash memory-based integrated circuit design. From 1997-2009 he was with the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently Professor of Computer Systems in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Sydney, Visiting Professor at Imperial College, Visiting Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, and Chief Technology Advisor to Cluster Technology.

Prof Leong was co-founder and program co-chair of the International Conference on Field Programmable Technology (FPT); program co-chair of the International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL); Senior Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Reconfigurable Technology and Systems (TRETS) and Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Computer Aided Design (TCAD). The author of more than 150 technical papers and 5 patents, Dr. Leong was the recipient of the 2005 FPT conference Best Paper as well as the 2007 and 2008 FPL conference Stamatis Vassiliadis Outstanding Paper awards.

A flexible arithmetic system for simulation

Custom hardware accelerators are commonly used in simulation systems requiring high computational power. Such applications often have few data dependencies, allowing implementation using parallel datapaths. For such problems, optimization of the datapath of the circuits leads to significant improvements in overall perfor-mance. The Computer Arithmetic Synthesis Technology (CAST) framework, developed in this work, allows one to quickly explore the design space in three dimensions: the number system, the operator architecture and the configuration of individual opera-tors. It utilizes sophisticated arithmetic algorithms and reconfigurable architectures, captured in the object libraries. The final result is an optimized datapath satisfying user requirements, and the output can be controlled at different levels. To demonstrate its ability, the CAST framework is used to implement a number of simulation systems including the datapath for the force computation pipeline of N-body simulation and Monte Carlo simulation for interest rate financial deriva-tives. A novel multiplier generator and an efficient random number generator are also presented as basic building blocks for simulation. Together, these tools pro-vide an easy way to describe simulation system in a number system independent manner, and generate implementation to satisfy different performance, area and ac-curacy constraints.

Towards a human airbag system using /spl mu/IMU with SVM training for falling-motion recognition

A Micro Inertial Measurement Unit (µIMU) which is based on MEMS accelerometers and gyro sensors i... more A Micro Inertial Measurement Unit (µIMU) which is based on MEMS accelerometers and gyro sensors is developed for real-time recognition of human body motions, specifically falling-down motions caused by slippage. A µIMU measures three-dimensional angular rates and accelerations. With an integrated microcontroller, the overall size of our µIMU is less than 26mm*20mm*20mm. We present our progress on using this µIMU based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) training to recognize falling-motions. The digital sample rate of the micro controller is 200 Hz which ensures rapid reaction to short falling time and also gives a sufficient database for SVM recognition. Experimental results show that our system can achieve a lateral falling-motion recognition rate of 100% using selected eigenvector sets generated from 200 experimental sets. Our goal is to implement this system to a human airbag system designed to protect hip fractures of the elderly.
