This message may not have been sent by...

If a message doesn't have authentication data to confirm it was sent through Gmail, we'll warn you to protect your information.

Why the warning message shows up

You'll see this warning if a sender looks like [email protected], but we can't verify that the email is actually coming from that Gmail account.

This can happen if the sender:

  • Is sending from a fake Gmail account
  • Emailed you from a website (for example, to share a news article)
  • Sent an email that was automatically forwarded (for example, from your school account to your personal Gmail)

Option 1: The message seems suspicious

If you aren't sure the message was sent by the Gmail address you see, follow these steps.

  1. In the warning message, click Report phishing.
  2. Do not provide any personal information or click any links in the email.

Option 2: The message is from a trusted sender

If you know a sender is legitimate, you can remove the warning from their messages in the future.

Remove the warning from one sender at a time
  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the search box at the top, click Show search options photos tune.
  3. In the "From" field, type the sender's email address.
  4. In the bottom right, click Create filter.
  5. Check Never send it to Spam.
  6. Click Create filter.
Remove the warning from forwarded messages

If you automatically forward messages from another email address, you can remove the warning from those messages.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the top right, click Settings Settings and then See all settings.
  3. At the top, click the Accounts and Import or Accounts tab.
  4. In the "Send mail as" section, click Add another email address.
  5. Follow the steps on your screen.

Instead of seeing the warning on messages you forward, you'll see something like "[email protected] via anotherdomain.com."

Stop showing the warning to people I email

You can stop this warning from showing up to your recipients. To get started, choose the way you send Gmail messages:

Phone or tablet

Make sure you follow Gmail's setup guidelines for your mobile device.

"Send mail as" Yahoo! Mail, AOL, Outlook, or other non-Google account

If you sign in to Gmail and use the "send mail as" feature to send from a non-Google account, make sure you use Google's SMTP servers.

Outlook, Apple Mail, or other mail service

Make sure you set up your Gmail with IMAP or POP.

Work or school account

Contact your administrator to set up email authentication.

If these steps don't work, you can report the issue.
