5th Cell is an American game company that develops for Nintendo and iOS platforms. They are best known for their Drawn to Life and Scribblenauts series.
5th Cell was founded in 2003 by Joseph M. Tringali, Jeremiah Slaczka and Brett Caird. For the first few years of its existence, the company made games for cell phones. By 2006 however, development had shifted towards games for the Nintendo DS. Their first DS game, Drawn to Life, was released by THQ in 2007. THQ also published their next game, Lock's Quest, in 2008. It wasn't until 2009 though that 5th Cell would release the game that would launch them to stardom, Scribblenauts, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment acting as the publisher.
Scribblenauts was a major hit on the DS, selling nearly two million units over the next few years and receiving many awards. In America, it was the best selling non-Nintendo-made DS game of 2009. A year later, its sequel, Super Scribblenauts, was released. It too became a million-seller, and received good reviews. 2011's Scribblenauts Remix was a hit on iOS devices, garnering a million downloads in a few months. 5th Cell plans to release the next iteration of the franchise, Scribblenauts Unlimited, on November 18, as a Wii U launch title as well as the first Nintendo 3DS and PC title in the series.
