Full of Wonder

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new week on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog.

This week our theme is called ADD SOME TEXTURE and however you choose to create this texture, the DT can't wait to see your makes and projects.

For my make, I chose to feature Tim Holtz idea-ology as the main focal point and I created texture by adding multiple layers using tags, Texture Paste, stitched details and metal to name just a few things that bring this piece to life.

So, let's get started and here's how I created my piece ~ Full of Wonder!

ETCETERA PANEL

To begin with I used the larger size of the Rectangle Etcetera Panel and I applied a coat of Black Soot Distress Paint around the edges of the panel. Once the paint was dry, I then applied a good layer of Crackle Paste and allowed for this to dry, and for all that crusty goodness to appear.

When the crackles were ready, I ran a combination of Walnut Stain and Pumice Stone Distress Crayons to accentuate the cracks and crazing before I blended out any harshness of colour with a semi dry wet wipe.

The panel is now ready to add the next layer and for this I chose paper from the Backdrops Volume 3 paper pack and cut a piece slightly smaller than the Etcetera Panel. I then machine stitched around the outside edge of the paper and in between each of the numbered sections, following the lines that are printed on the paper.

After adding some rips and tears around the edges, I adhered the paper to the panel using Matte Collage Medium.

TAG

We're now ready to create the next layer, the tag and to begin with I used a Stampers Anonymous Etcetera Tag and a Mixed Media Heavystock Tag.

Taking the Heavystock tag, I placed the Mini sized Deco Feather Layering Stencil from Set 60 and applied Translucent Texture Paste through the design. After removing the stencil, and working quickly, I sprinkled Speckled Egg Distress Glaze over the top, tapped away the excess and set aside for the paste to dry. Dependent on weather, it usually takes about 30mins and once it is dry, I then carefully heat embossed the glaze until it was molten.

I then added the colour, and for this I used Distress Spray Stains and Oxide Sprays in the following colours:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAINS: Speckled Egg, Black Soot, Pumice Stone

DISTRESS OXIDE SPRAYS: Speckled Egg

I misted the tag with water, before spraying the stains, gave another mist of water over the top and let the colours blend together before setting to one side to dry. You can also carefully heat dry the stains.

After inking the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink, I added a machine stitched border and adhered the tag to the Size 8 Etcetera Tag before attaching the layered tag to the centre of the Etcetera Panel using foam pads.

To cover the hole at the top of the tag, I used a Machinery Head which I altered with Candied Apple Distress Paint. To complete the tag, I added an Ephemera Numbers Strip to the top left of the tag, and aged it with a little Gathered Twigs Distress ink.

METAL GEARS

Now we can start bringing this piece to life and I began by altering the metal industrial gears and sprockets and applied a touches of Translucent Grit Paste to the surface to add texture. After allowing the paste to dry, I used the following paints to add colour, and combined them with some Foundry Wax that I added at the end:

DISTRESS PAINT: Crackling Campfire, Black Soot

ALCHEMY PAINT: Prima Marketing Art Alchemy Burnt Sienna Liquid Acrylic Paint from my stash (sadly no longer available from SSS)

Foundry Wax: Distress Foundry Wax Kit 2

I apply each paint layer by layer to build up the colour, starting with the palest and then ending with just a light touch of Black Soot. Once the paint was dry, I then applied the Foundry Wax, Sterling and Statue are always my 'go-to' colours for this process.

I applied a light coverage of the wax, and I don't apply this as a block coverage all over the metal ~ you only need a touch here and there. To set the wax, use a heat tool.

At this stage, if you need to add any more colours of paint...just use a fine paintbrush to add details.

WORD PLAQUE, OPTICAL LENS and PHOTOFRAME

The word plaque and the Photo frame are both altered in exactly the same way as the gears, using the same combination of mediums and to complete this band, I added a Hardware Head to each side, attaching with a dab of Collage Medium...

...you will see that I added some more of the Translucent grit paste to the frame before applying the paint.

Behind the frame I placed a Photomatic Vintage Photo, which I colour tinted using Distress Crayons and a water brush.

At this stage, I used the same paints to alter an Optical Lens which will be sitting over the top of the frame. I added some red cotton to the handle for extra detail.

BUILDING UP THE LAYERS

To build up the central area, I began by adding the ruler pieces. I snap these tiny rulers into smaller pieces, leaving the ends jagged. I then altered the colour to more of a vintage feel by swiping Gathered Twigs Distress Ink across the surface. Wipe away any excess with a baby wipe and blend the ink over the wood.

I then attached the rulers to my piece, placing one directly across the tag itself and two further pieces underneath the tag.

I then layered all my gears, attaching them with Matte Collage Medium, and added the Word Plaque.

Finally, I added the photo frame and the Optical Lens which I attached over the top.

As the finishing detail for this tag, I added the Ephemera Piece, W.P. Collins across the bottom. This piece is from the Field Notes Ephemera Pack.

DETAILS

We're nearly there and all that's left is the details...

I attached screw heads to the centres of some of the gears, painted to match the gears themselves...

...and I also added some to the rulers, which I painted red with Candied Apple Distress Paint.

I placed a Mini Stencil Chip, No.7 to the right hand side of the tag, and again added a screw head to this piece.

On the opposite side I clipped a Hinge Clip into position. This clip was in my stash, but I had altered it with Salvaged Patina, Antiqued Bronze and Black Soot distress Paints.

I then hung a Hook Clasp from the clip. My clasp actually broke, so I couldn't hang the chain but I quite like the way it looks, so I just went with it, and left it as it was.

To complete this make, I added the word "Workroom" from the Labeled Remnant Rubs to the top left corner....

...and on either side in the bottom right and left hand corners, I hammered a nail tack into position, altering these with the same combination of paints as I used on the metal work.

So that's my make for this week's challenge complete and I hope the ideas and techniques have inspired you to create some texture on your projects.

Shine Like A Diamond...

Hello friends...

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed Tim's latest party over on YouTube. Thank you for all the wonderful comments and messages about my make ~ I've read them all and they've meant the world to me! If you haven't seen the LIVE yet, then you can catch up with the replay here.

So back to today, and we have a brand new challenge starting today over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog and this week our theme is...Fabulous Florals!

With so many beautiful flower products available, I'm sure this is going to be a popular challenge, and if you'd love to join us, then the DT are looking forward to seeing what you create.

For my make, I chose to use the gorgeous Floral Elements Stamp Set, combined with one of the new products from the brand new Tim Holtz Chapter 3 release by Sizzix and I made a tag card, that celebrates friendship.

Let's get started because it's time to get creative...

I began by making my card blank, and using a Mini Etcetera Tag as a template, I drew around the outline and then cut the card to create the tag shape, which has a fold at the top. I then covered the card front with a panel of paper from the Etcetera paper stash and machine stitched a border around the edge, leaving some of the threads to hang loose.

At the top of my card blank, I used a tab ~ this is one of the new dies in the Specimen Thinlits Die Set and I cut it from Mixed Media Heavystock card that I had inked with a combination of Old Paper and Antique Linen. I then attached the folded tab to the top fold of my card before applying a 'Fig 2' Speciment Remnant Rub.

With my card ready, it's time to add those layers and we'll start with the background....

BACKGROUND

For the background to my card, I used the Linked Circles Layering Stencil for a monoprint technique. I inked the back of the stencil with a combination of Crackling Campfire, Picked Raspberry, Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade Distress Inks and then lightly spritzed over the top with water.

I then flipped the stencil over and placed it directly onto a panel of Distress watercolour card to transfer the print onto the surface.

I use a paper towel to dab away any excess water or ink, before lifting the stencil to reveal the print.

After I heat dried the card, I inked the edges with Old Paper Distress Ink, and then flicked droplets of Picked Raspberry over the surface.

To add more interest to the background, I inked up one of the stamps from the Botanic Collage Stamp set with Jet Black Archival Ink and randomly stamped the newsprint part of the stamp onto my background.

After matting the background onto a panel of cream cardstock, I mounted it onto my card front using foam pads.

PHOTO

Moving onto the photo, and for this I used one of Tim's Photobooth images and the slide die from the Specimen Die Set. After applying clear gesso over the photo to prime it, I colour tinted the photo with Distress Crayons and a water brush.

I cut the slide from card that I had in my stash ~ from what I can remember, I inked it with Speckled Egg, Frayed Burlap and Antique Linen Distress Spray Stains.

I placed the photo inside the slide die cut and then folded it in half and adhered it shut. I then added Hex Fasteners to each corner of the slide.

I then added some crackle paste to the corners of the frame, and once the paste was dry, I inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

I then wrapped twine around the wider part of the frame and tied this into a knot before attaching a mini pin and a tiny tag.

The tiny tag is cut using the Collector Thinlits Die Set and I then used Remnant Rubs to add a date, 1965. I'm sending this card to a friend, so that's why I chose this date which I made up from numbers in the remnant rub pack.

I attached the slide to the card front, placing it on the right hand side using foam pads.

FLOWERS

Now we can move onto the flowers and for this I used the Floral Elements stamp set and stamped some flowers and foliage onto watercolour card.

I then watercolored them with Distress Inks that I applied as a palette onto my glass mat and using a water brush, I picked up the colour to add to each stamped image.

Flowers: Crackling Campfire, Picked Raspberry, Wild Honey, Candied Apple with Black Soot centres and white pen highlights

Leaves: Shabby Shutters, Bundled Sage, Peeled Paint

I blasted them dry with a heat gun and then fussy cut each individual element.

I arranged the flowers and foliage to cascade down the card and around the photo, attaching them with various depths of foam pads to add dimension.

Finally, I added a stamped sentiment, Shine Brightly taken from the Noteworthy stamp set.

I stamped this onto an offcut of paper from the Etcetera paper stash and then mounted the sentiment onto a scrap of cotton calico.

I then attach the sentiment beneath my floral arrangement.

To complete the card, I added two small paper clips on the top right hand corner.

...and that is my card finished, ready to send to a friend who is celebrating a birthday next week!

She Whispered It Softly, Under The Stars...

Hello friends...

Hope you are all safe and well and had a good weekend! Here in the UK we are in the midst of another lockdown and like so many others, we're all wondering when it will all end. It's definitely been a long road but hopefully, with light at the end of the tunnel.

The one thing that we can all enjoy though is, crafting and with so many new products due to be released over the coming weeks and months, I think it will keep us busy and of course, as we start a brand new week that means that we have a new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week our theme is called WE'RE ON A ROLL!

Now for my project, I instantly thought wheels, gears and all things industrial but I wanted to think outside the box a little and as the little grey cells started ticking, I suddenly realised what I wanted to do and that was to use and create one of my favourite embellishments, little paper rolls that would use up all my scrap papers and then layer something, which in this project would be a photograph 'on a roll', and that's what I did and I hope you love the inspiration behind this vintage style tag!

So let's begin ~ it's time to start the new challenge!

To begin with I took the mini etcetera tag and covered it with one of the paper designs from the Abandoned Paper Stash, adding a stitched border around the outside and attaching it to the tag with matte Collage Medium and as always, I left a few loose strands of thread hanging from the edges. I just love the look of these loose pieces which help to create texture and movement in the piece.

I then applied a coat of the medium over the top, allowed this to dry before applying some Crackle Paste around the edges and over the surface of the covered tag.

Once again, allow this medium to dry and once it is, I used the Walnut Stain Distress Crayon, lightly scribbled over the crackled surface and then blended out using my finger which I slightly dampened.

To complete the tag, I ran the crayon around the outside and blended away any harsh lines.

Now moving on and starting with the rolls, I used some of the offcuts that I had in my Abandoned paper stash ~ this is such a cool way to use up all those pieces that get stuck in a box for 'one of those days' and all you need to do is cut the paper into strips. I usually cut them approx 5cm in width and the longest length of the paper is 14cm, the shortest length 4.5cm.

I then take each panel of paper and using a round pencil, I wrapped the paper around the pencil to form a cigar shape and place a line of adhesive to secure them. Repeat to create 9 rolls all of various lengths.

Once I had all my rolls, I then arranged them to create the centre piece and attached each roll to the next one using a line of Matte Collage Medium in-between.

After the rolls were dry and set in place, I then wrapped some red thread around the centre of the rolls and tied with a scruffy bow with some more of those loose fibres that I love left to hang, and tied this on the left. I then used a loop pin and attached some buttons from my stash, hooking it onto the red cotton thread.

Taking the covered tag, I arranged and collaged a section of ephemera pieces which I took from Field Notes and Layers Ephemera sets.

I attached these directly to the tag with Matte Collage Medium, applied a coat of the medium over the top and then allowed these to dry. To add some shading around the edges, I used the Black Soot Distress Pen and just ran it around the outside edges of the ephemera pieces, before smudging the ink with my fingertip.

I attached the paper rolls over the top of the ephemera pieces and stuck them with Matte Collage Medium.

To add some more layers, I placed a piece of mica over the top of the rolls before attaching a vintage Photo Booth image which I coloured tinted with Distress Crayons before stitching a border around the edge.

I added some small gold stars and a mini paperclip to complete the photo and adhered it to a piece of  felt, cut with pinking shears. Attach the photo to the mica with matte collage medium.

Now to add some embellishments...

...and on the right hand side, I placed two small floral adornments which I embossed with Fossilized Amber and Speckled Egg Distress Glaze to add some colour. Simply apply the Embossing Dabber over the top of the metal and then sprinkle the glaze over the top. Tap away the excess and heat emboss, being careful not touch the hot metal until it's cooled completely.

We're nearly there and as the finishing touch to the background, I added three gold die cut stars before moving onto the wording.

For this I used a combination of Clippings Stickers and a Quote Chip.

I attached the stickers at the top of the rolls, 'she whispered it softly, under the stars'.

Beneath the rolls, I placed a quote chip "Be True To You". I punched two small holes in either end of the quote chip before applying the Embossing Dabber over the surface and embossing it with Antique Linen Distress Glaze. Heat the glaze until molten and then run the Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the top to add a vintage touch to the chip. Thread some more of the red cotton thread through each of the punched holes and then attach the chip to the tag.

I completed the chip with a couple of hardware heads, placed on either side and aged with a little Evergreen Bough Distress Paint to add a pop of colour.

Finally, I made a tab from one of the Stitched Scraps pieces and placed this at the top of the tag. I looped the stitched piece in half, machine stitched a line across to form the loop and then stuck it with matte collage medium to the top of my tag. I added a button threaded with red cotton.

I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial and you've been inspired by my tag. As always, if you do make anything from a lightbulb moment that you've seen here on my blog, please just tag me on my social media or leave a message so I can pop by to take a look ~ I always love to see your work!
