A conference on the methodologies and epistemologies of our discipline strikes me as an ideal opp... more A conference on the methodologies and epistemologies of our discipline strikes me as an ideal opportunity to reflect on what is simultaneously one of the most fruitful and one of the most problematic themes in the study of Augustan poetry, the idea of performance. In order to raise the stakes somewhat, I would like to consider the notion of performance alongside two of its more notorious bedfellows: Horatian lyric and the institution of the recitatio. In particular, with a nod to last year's colloquium on the Augustan space, I would like to examine whether there is anything new to be said about the performance space created in and by the recitatio, and how this performance space relates to the textual constructions of mise en scène that we find throughout the Odes, by way of the example of Odes 3.1.
