In India, more than 40% of children are found to be affected by dental caries. Occlusal surfaces of the teeth are most susceptible sites for caries development due to their morphology. They are least benefited from fluoride application. Various efforts have been made by the preventive means to decline the rate of caries, one of which being sealant application. Sealants have come into existence long back since 1971 when first pit and fissure sealant Nuva-Caulk came into existence. There have been piles of literature stating the benefits that arrive from sealing the teeth. However, one crucial point that is being missed most of the times is the cost-effectiveness of the sealant. There are various schools of thoughts, regarding this that is controversial ones. Some of the analysts believe that always sealing may be a bit costlier, but it reduces subsequent dental treatments and hence saves money as well as time. However, some believe that why to unnecessarily seal the teeth in all cases even when the child is not at a risk to develop caries. Hence, we need to foresee both the sides of equation. For best clinical practice and decision-making, we need to have a balance of best evidence, clinical judgment, and the most important, patient needs and preferences.

Materials and methods: This study was conducted in the age group of 4-8 years anxious children who reported to the department. The informed written consent from the parents was taken. The 40 children were divided into two groups: group Ion screen distraction aid and group II-audiovisual distraction aid (VR glasses) with 20 patients in each group. Each child in all the subgroups had gone through three dental visits. Child anxiety level at each visit was assessed by using a combination of anxiety measuring parameters. Results: Chi-square and Student's t-test (two-tailed, independent) analyses were used to find the significance of study parameters on a categorical scale and continuous scale between two groups (intergroup analysis) on metric parameters. It revealed that VR glasses audiovisual aid group showed a statistically highly significant difference from the on-screen method. Conclusion: Audiovisual distraction aid was found to be a more effective mode of distraction in the management of anxious children when compared to the on-screen distraction method.

Materials and method: A Survey was conducted, where children were divided into three groups depending on Age, Group A (3-6 years) Group B (7-9 years) Group C (10-12 years). Class 1 cavity preparation followed by different colored composite restorations of FLUO and PEARL JEN-RAINBOW were done on typodont. All the preferences were recorded according to ranking and visual analog scale. Result: Overall ratings showed difference in preferences of all age-groups. It was difficult to rely on the results revealed by evaluating overall ranking, further it was evaluated based on different age-groups and showed significant difference. For overall preferences recorded using visual analog scale was only significant for one color, pearl white (p=0.018). Conclusion: The findings of this survey suggest that great diversity in preferences was observed not only among gender but even different age-groups.

Immediate application of a surface coating agent is suggested to protect glass ionomer cement against moisture contamination and dehydration during early setting. Aim: To compare marginal microleakage of two different Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC)- Conventional GIC and Resin Modified GIC in primary anterior teeth using three surface coating materials. Materials and Methods: An in vitro study was conducted between January 2014 to October 2017 on freshly extracted 40 anterior primary teeth which were randomly assigned into two main groups (Fuji II GIC and Fuji II LC GIC) with four subgroups (control-no surface coating, A=GC Fují Varnish II, B=GC G-Coat Plus, C=Icon). A standardised Class V cavity preparation was prepared on the labial surface of each tooth. Specimens were coated with two layers of nail varnish, leaving a 1 mm window around the cavity margins and placed in a solution of Methylene blue Dye for 24 hour at 37°C. The teeth were sectioned longitudinally in a buccolingual direction of the restorations and evaluated under stereomicroscope to check extent of dye penetration. The results were analysed by ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test (p≤0.05). Results: It was found that maximum microleakage was seen in group 1 (Fuji II GIC) as compared to group 2 (Fuji II LC GIC) and it was non-significant (p=0.53). Ascending order for mean microleakage for Group 1 was as follows: Control >GC Fuji Varnish >Icon DMG >GC G-Coat and for Group 2: Control >GC Fuji Varnish >Icon DMG >GC G-Coat. Icon when compared with Gc coat and Varnish also showed non-significant (p=0.137) difference in Group 2. Conclusion: All three different surface coatings can seal glass ionomer restorations. The GC G-Coat Plus has the least microleakage on Resin-Modified GIC (RMGIC) compared to the other surface coatings. This would aid the clinicians to make appropriate decision regarding the choice of material to be used for restoration and coating in anterior primary teeth.

Epileptic children, who are on active treatment with antiepileptic drugs, have a well-recognized side effect of gingival enlargement. Therefore, all efforts should be made, particularly for the population who are diagnosed or affected by the systemic disease. This study was conducted with an aim to determine oral hygiene status and gingival enlargement among epileptic and healthy children as related to various antiepileptic drugs. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional observational study was conducted in the department of pedodontics and attached general hospital. A sample size of 120 participants with 60 healthy and 60 epileptic children between age 2 and 14 years were included. Oral health status of participants was examined using oral hygiene simplified index and plaque index. Gingival enlargement was assessed using Miranda–Brunet index. For statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA test, independent t-test, and Pearson's Chi-square test were used. Results: From the total participants included in the study, 49% of participants had good oral hygiene from healthy group, and 28% participants had poor oral hygiene from the epileptic group. Sodium valproate was the most common drug used and was associated with increased gingival enlargement. Conclusion: Conclusion can be drawn that epileptic children under medication had poor oral hygiene and an increased risk for gingival enlargement as compared to their healthy counterparts. It must be stressed that the epileptic patients should be given dental care without conditions and provided with best possible care to restore esthetics and functions.

The purpose of this paper was to report the case of a 7-year-old girl who experienced pain in her permanent maxillary central incisors following a fall from a bicycle. A radiographic examination revealed immature maxillary central incisors with mid-root oblique and horizontal root fractures. Splinting was performed, and the child was observed under a regular follow-up regime. After 18 months, clinical examination showed normal tooth color and position, with a positive response to the pulp test. This case report also aims to provide an insight into the splinting duration and various splinting techniques and how this can affect the prognosis.

There are very few researches conducted to have and understanding of S-ECC with micronutrients. Study conducted in Canada reported the association of low iron levels in children with high caries index where 11% were found to be anemic and 6% showed iron deficiency. 8 Biological process of dental caries may change due to IntroductIon Early childhood caries though has got its mention in literature over a century, still it poses a challenge on developing and industrialized nation. In spite of increase in awareness in past decade, early childhood caries remains as the most prevalent childhood oral disease. 1 Dental caries has been regarded as disease caused due to transmissible bacteria of mutans streptococci strain. They are dental hard tissue adherent and produce acid by breakdown of sugars in the food resulting in demineralization of enamel and dentin over a period of time. Severe early childhood caries has been associated with children up to the age of 6 years; showing signs of caries on smooth surfaces of maxillary anterior teeth. If the number of cavitated lesions or extracted or filled due to dental caries is more than or equal to the age of child, it is regarded as S-ECC. 2 The implication of severe dental caries in children may have its effect on general health apart from affecting the orodental tissues. Many children reporting with severe caries have found to be weighing less due to malnourishment resulting in anemia and modified somatic growth. 3 The probability of deficiency in vitamins and minerals is high in children with severe dental caries. Various researches are suggestive 4,5 of weight less than normal in those children having severe caries; and recent evidence 6,7 had similar observations as well showing deviation from 1,2,4-6

Case-based learning (CBL) uses virtual "trigger" cases to stimulate interest and generate the knowledge and skill needed in patient care and can bring the improvement. In the present study, 60 students from final BDS were included and distributed into two major groups (A and B) consisting of 30 students in each group. Group A was given didactic lecture and Group B was trained in the same topic through CBL. Pre-and post-test questionnaire was given to all 60 students before and after the training session. Intra-and intergroup comparisons showed significant difference in both the groups. CBL method showed more improvement in students than observed in students taught through didactic method. CBL simulates the clinical environment and encourages students' clinical thinking more effectively than conventional teaching.

Parents usually seek paediatricians' guidance in securing their child's normal growth and development. If proper counsel regarding the child's development and eruption of teeth as well as guidance for the prevention of various oral diseases is rendered at this age, better oral health can be attained for these children. Aims: This study aimed to determine and assess the knowledge and treatment needs of paediatricians for infant oral health care (OHC) in Vadodara, Gujarat. Materials and Methods: One hundred paediatricians practicing in Vadodara City, registered in the Indian Medical Association, were randomly selected for the study. They were requested to fill an objective questionnaire without providing any infant oral health information. Filled questionnaire pro forma was collected by principle investigator. The descriptive analysis was done for the data. Results: Out of the 100 paediatricians, ninety returned the questionnaire, with the response rate of 90%. Knowledge regarding infant OHC was found to be poor in 60% and average in 40% and attitude regarding the same was found to be poor in 20%, average in 60% and good in 20% of the responders. Awareness regarding infant OHC was found to be good in 80% and average in 20% of the paediatricians. Conclusion: Paediatricians need to update themselves on recent recommendations regarding infant oral health to ensure that all their patients receive timely preventive and restorative dental care. This study showed that there is a need for more communication between the paediatricians and pedodontists so as to deliver better child OHC.

The flurbiprofen gel was indigenously prepared in the concentration of 0.3%. The 30 patients with localized periodontal pockets measuring ≥5 mm were randomly divided into three groups. The groups received flurbiprofen gel, flurbiprofen gel after prophylaxis, and placebo gel after oral prophylaxis, respectively. The clinical parameters for plaque and gingival inflammation were evaluated at baseline, 7(th) day, and 14(th) day. The results of the study suggested the statistically significant (P &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.05) improvement in the gingival status of the patients with the use of flurbiprofen gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing as compared to oral prophylaxis or gel alone. The data demonstrated that the additional use of local drug delivery of flurbiprofen through gel media enhances the positive effects of scaling and root planing and helps in faster resolution of the inflammation.
