2017-8 HUNGRY CITY

Resources to support a project exploring the spatial politics and architecture of our food supply. Students will design a small ethical supermarket combined with a public amenity space for Central Manchester. The burgeoning local population is in urgent need of amenities whilst commercial pressures to maximise land value result in the loss of public and community spaces. Projects will use Carolyn Steel's idea "Sitopia" exploring how food can be used as a tool to shape the world more positively.

Their aim is to share their passion for cheese with everyone, whether here online, in their quaint little shop in a grade 2 listed old dairy in Woolton village, Liverpool, at their unit in one of the best markets in the North West at Warrington, one of the regular Farmers Markets they attend in Liverpool and the Wirral, their renowned Cheese Schools or one of the many events the team attend."
"Homebaked is a community land trust + co-operative bakery situated ...between the neighbourhoods of Everton and Anfield, just opposite the Liverpool Football Club. The project is co-owned and co-produced by people who live and work in our area. Starting from having saved our iconic neighbourhood bakery from demolition and developed it into a thriving community-run business with a beautiful apartment above we are proposing to regenerate our high street ‘brick by brick and loaf by loaf."

Located in central Manchester, the National Co-operative Archive is home to a wide array of records relating to the history of the worldwide co-operative movement. The collections include rare books, periodicals, manuscripts, films, photographs and oral histories, and provide researchers with an unrivalled resource for the development of the co-operative movement, from the initial ideas of the eighteenth century to the present day.

The shop sold fairly priced, good quality food during very hard times.
