The coordination and management of the SIM Capacity Building is in charge of the Professional Development Coordinator.
The Professional Development Coordinator is nominated by active SIM members, appointed by the Steering Council and ratified by the General Assembly for a period of three years during which he/she is to promote activities to improve the technical capacity of members and partners in the region. He/She can be designated for a maximum of two consecutive terms.
Responsibilities:
- To promote the exchange of information on training opportunities.
- To carry out other tasks entrusted by the Council and related to professional development.
- To submit reports to the Council and one annual report to the General Assembly on SIM activities for professional development.
- To work in close coordination with the President of the TC in the coordination of SIM training activities.

NIST-SIM Engagement Opportunity
The NIST-SIM Engagement Opportunity provides support to National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) or Designated institutes (DIs) affiliated with the Interamerican Metrology System (SIM). NIST supports SIM efforts to promote an integrated metrology infrastructure throughout the Americas. Applications must have approval by NMI or DI Management. Applicants must specify what type of activity is being sought, the level of support required, and the project plan. Applicants requesting Guest Researcher appointments must meet language proficiency requirements. Deadline to Apply: October 11th, 2019. Internships in the field of Emerging Technologies (IADB Project)
The Inter-American Metrology System (SIM), through the support of the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank, executed the Project “Strengthening National Metrology Institutes in the Hemisphere, in support of emerging technologies”. One of the aims is to enhance capabilities in emerging metrology areas through the promotion of internships between the SIM members, i.e., the National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and Designated Institutes (DIs). Twenty internships were offered in two open calls, from May 01st to 21st, 2018 and from Aug 1st to 27th, 2018. Applications from 8 countries were approved and will happen until the end of March 2019. The reports will be compiled and offered to the SIM’s community as soon as feasible.
Training and Travel assistance for SIM NMIs to attend NCSL International Technical Exchange
In February 2018, the NCSL-I sponsored 15 professionals from NMI and DI from 8 countries to take part in the well known International Technical Exchange. For three days, an assortment of more than 20 short courses (4 to 16 hours) was offered to the SIM’s community. The benefit for the participant included the trip to the venue (Orlando, Florida, USA), a day allowance and one year of free enrolment as a NCSL-I member.
NCSLI has once again received support from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to support SIM attendance at the 2020 Technical Exchange in Houston, Texas (24 – 26 February).
