Ahmed Ibrahim Omar Abdel hameed received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Power and Machines Engineering from The Higher Institute of Engineering at ElShorouk City, in 2011, M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Power and Machines from the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, Egypt, in 2014, and 2019, respectively. Between September 2011 and September 2019, he was an Teaching Assistant at The Higher Institute of Engineering at ElShorouk City. His research interests include FACTS in power systems, power quality, renewable energy, smart grid, energy efficiency, optimization, green energy, and economics. The expanding use of photovoltaics (PV) as a green energy resource has been rising in these years... more The expanding use of photovoltaics (PV) as a green energy resource has been rising in these years, mostly due to the possibility of being incorporated with traditional power systems, to meet the world's energy needs and reduce carbon emissions. However, providing green electricity from this renewable generator is frequently vulnerable to power quality (PQ) disruptions resulting from the PV's intermittent nature and other factors associated with the electric grid, power converters, and linked loads. These disruptions need to be reduced to keep the investigated system's PQ from deteriorating. The investigated system includes PV, DC-DC, and DC-AC converters, filter, power grid, and control schemes. If the DC-DC converter is not managed, a deviation from the maximum power point (MPP) extrapolated from the PV system will take place. In order to maximize the energy harvested from the PV system by managing the DC-DC converter, this research developed two MPP tracking (MPPT) algorithms: artificial neural networks (ANN) and cuckoo search (CS). Additionally, a design and implementation for a shunt active power filter (LCL) using genetic algorithm and GRG is provided to lower the injected total harmonic distortion (THD) and thereby enhance the PQ. To achieve the smallest size of the LCL components, the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) was the best compared to genetic algorithms GA. The results of the simulation showed that ANN performed better at tracking maximum power than CS. With the designed LCL, the THD is reduced by 99.78% compared to without a filter. This paper aims to compare the efficiency and performance of PV and WT as sources of RESs to power polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzer (PEMEL) under different conditions. The study assessed the input/output power of PV and WT, the efficiency of the MPPT controller, the calculation of the green hydrogen production rate, and the efficiency of each system separately. The study analyzed variable irradiance from 600 to 1000 W/m2 for a PV system and a fixed temperature of 25°C, while for the WT system, it considered variable wind speed from 10 to 14 m/s and zero fixed pitch angle. The study demonstrated that the applied controllers were effective, fast, low computational, and highly accurate. Most of this energy is for the provision of lighting, heating, cooling, and air conditioning. Increasing awareness of the environmental impact of CO2 and NOx emissions and CFCs triggered a renewed interest in environmentally friendly cooling, and heating technologies. It was therefore considered desirable to reduce energy consumption and decrease the rate of depletion of world energy reserves and pollution of the environment. One way of reducing building energy consumption is to design building green, which is more economical in their use of energy. This research attempts to formulate an implementation strategy for developing and enhancing the Energy Category of an Egyptian Green Building Rating System. This implementation strategy is based on the detailed review of the major green building guidelines globally and contextual information of Egyptian society collected through a survey questionnaire. The results show the energy credits that should be considered as mandatory within the Egyptian Green Building Rating System and indicate the other credits that should be taken into account and propose weights of such energy credits.

Alleviation of the transients induced in large photovoltaic power plants by direct lightning stroke

Lightning strokes are considered the most common passively effective cause on the photovoltaic (P... more Lightning strokes are considered the most common passively effective cause on the photovoltaic (PV) power plants compared to the other internal faults. In this paper, a 1 MW solar PV grid-connected power plant was studied. Lightning strikes were applied at different positions in the grid to test its effect on the PV farm&#39;s components with the variation of the strike&#39;s position. Also, it was studied the effect of lightning on the PV plant elements with the variation of lightning characteristics. Different mitigation techniques are applied such as choosing of metal oxide surge arrester (MOSA) with a suitable rating, designing high voltage filter (HVF), and parallel combination between them. The modeling and analysis were implemented by using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The results show that when the lightning stroke had been applied nearby the grid&#39;s inverter position, it negatively harmed the PV farm by about a 16.1 % increase in peak voltage. As, either of the lightning characteristics increase, their effect appears negatively over all the system&#39;s components especially the tail time parameter when it increases from 50 ls to 300 ls, it caused an increase in the peak voltage value at the striking position by 71.7%. Finally, the parallel combination between using MOSA and HVF represents an efficient mitigation technique for the lightning stroke over the solar farm totally with a reduction percentage of 96.3% than using MOSA only and 95% than using just HVF. Therefore, it effectively reduces the maintenance and replacement cost for the expensive components in the PV grid-connected plant.

A literature study on the above key areas shows an increasing consideration of EVs over the past decade. Further, the recommendations for user-friendly selection of the Charging Station (CS) are discussed. The transport sector is one of the leading contributors to global warming. It has a high dependence on fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel, which are expected to be scarce shortly. Therefore, EVs have attracted considerable attention as they can minimize fuel consumption and emissions. For the last few years, studies related to Plug-in-Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs)/EVs have drawn the researcher&#39;s attention. Moreover, several technical articles associated with charging technologies with available infrastructures are discussed, and we highlighted their pros and cons, particularly in charging infrastructure, and the charging power and power transfer between EV and grid are broadly discussed. From a customer perspective, the selection of charging stations and associated problems are presented. Finally, the suggestions for the user-friendly selection of charging stations are discussed.

Distributed FACTS based-switched filter compensator (SFC) is proposed to ensure efficient utilization of vehicle-to-grid battery chargers. A dynamic multi-level error-driven control strategy is proposed to safeguard a best performance of power quality (PQ) towards fast charging of the storage system, voltage improvement and stabilization of the DC and AC nodes, improvement of power factor of AC buses, inrush current minimization and harmonic distortion reduction. The proposed SFC is controlled via a multi-level functional error-driven inter-coupled weighted modified proportional-integral-derivative (WM-PID) controller. A comparative study of the proposed SFC and a conventional D-STATCOM is presented by applying a recent bio-inspired algorithm for optimizing the self-tuning of the PID controllers’ gains in terms of change at state of charge (SOC) to reflect the performance of the storage system. Matlab/Simulink software is utilized to simulate the distributed FACTS schemes. The results attained show the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed SFC topology.

Abstract This paper presents an economical-technical-environmental dispatch (ETED) model for an a... more Abstract This paper presents an economical-technical-environmental dispatch (ETED) model for an adapted IEEE 30-bus system incorporated with thermal and a mix of renewable energy sources (RESs). Total fuel costs, active power losses, and emissions level minimization is the main aim. Different equality and inequality limits involving prohibited operating zones (POZs) are considered as system restrictions. Metaheuristic optimization techniques – moth-flame optimization, salp swarm algorithm, improved grey wolf optimizer, and multi-verse optimizer – are employed to find the best solution for the generation cost, losses, and emissions. Various scenarios are examined to approve the ability of the formulated optimization model in solving the problem. A weighted sum strategy using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to convert the multi-objective problem into a normalized single-objective one. The AHP-ETED model presented in this work can significantly minimize fuel costs to 902.4951 $/h, lower emission levels as 0.09785 t/h, and achieve a lower power loss of 2.4110 MW. The results attained validate that the IGWO outperforms the other considered algorithms in finding the best solution to the ETED problem.

It is a member of a family of devices and switched dynamic voltage stabilization converters that were developed to ensure minimal loss of excitation, voltage stabilization, energy efficient utilization, power quality enhancement and harmonic distortion reduction in AC distribution grid networks. A novel-dual action distributed FACTS based–switched power filter compensator (SPFC) scheme is developed for efficient utilization of wind energy under varying wind conditions and major load excursions. A dynamic multi-level error-driven decoupled time de-scaled multi regulation control strategy is used to guarantee better power quality performance in terms of voltage enhancement and stabilization of the AC buses, improvement of power factor, and harmonic distortion reduction. The proposed SPFC was controlled using an inter-coupled weighted modified proportional-integral-derivative (WM-PID) controller. Cuckoo search (CS) optimization algorithm is employed to get the PID controller gains in terms of variations and excursions in wind speed and dynamic load excursions to reflect the performance of the compensator scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed SPFC with the multi-level control strategy has been assessed by time-domain simulations in Matlab/Simulink environment. The results obtained show the robustness of the proposed topology.

As the electric vehicle industry grows faster, plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) are expected to be the most dominant load in the utility sector in less than a decade. Regular charging of the battery energy storage system (BESS) is a mandate for the continued operation of the vehicle, and the PEVs are connected to the utility to charge. Since PEVs are mobility loads, predicting the interconnection of these mobility loads in the utility network for recharging is a major challenge. The intermittent connection of mobility loads to the grid for charging leads to an unpredictable increase in electricity demand and other grid-related issues. Optimal scheduling of PEV charging would conquer the grid-related issues and provide financial benefits to the users. In this paper, an intelligent charge scheduling technique of PEV charging for both residential and commercial charging stations using the heuristic algorithm is proposed and discussed. The primary objective of the algorithm is to achieve the minimization of PEV charging costs by implementing an interrupted charging schedule. The proposed algorithm is tested by conducting exhaustive simulation studies under several conditions for PEVs with different power ratings for residential and commercial charging scenarios. The time-of-use pricing (ToUP) system is adopted as a tariff system in this paper. A detailed comparison of the unscheduled algorithm, the modified placement algorithm (MPA) and proposed heuristic technique-based charge scheduling is carried out through simulation studies. A detailed cost analysis for charging the PEVs with the selected charge scheduling techniques for various conditions is conducted and cost minimization by implementing the proposed charging scheme is validated.
