Thirty years work experience in education, adult intellectual disability, social care, recruitment consultancy, commercial training, sales & management, reemployment and vocational training / career guidance. Specialising in the psychology of job seeking and reemployment, exploring the psycho-social factors that mediate self efficacy and subjective competency in the job seeking process. Working directly with groups and individuals, conducting qualitative and quantitative research with the aim of enhancing reemployment training programmes and organisational entry from the job seekers perspective. Third level associate lecturer in psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology.

The rise in the popularity of Emotional Intelligence mirrors quite accurately the increasingly di... more The rise in the popularity of Emotional Intelligence mirrors quite accurately the increasingly diverse and chaotic nature of the social-economic environment. Such diversity defines a consistent rise in unemployment while reemployment researchers continue to investigate the psycho-social variables that mediate job seeking intensity. This short paper investigated the potential influence of Emotional Intelligence as a cognitive variable mediating the ability to seek employment. By describing the theoretical relationship between EI and job seeking from their evolutionary functions of survival and adaptation, several parallels were drawn to justify the need for empirical research. Consequently, it was predicted that the factors that equate to Emotional Intelligence as described by Bar-on (1997) may serve to identify job seeking tenacity allowing for the more effective allocation of training resources.

'How much do you know about finding a job', is a simple enough question for an activity that 'can... more 'How much do you know about finding a job', is a simple enough question for an activity that 'can' effectively take up a significant proportion of our lives. A mixed method questionnaire and feedback sheet was statistically analysed, while written narratives were analysed for cues that illuminate the potential impact of 'job seeking knowledge' itself upon the job seeking process. Post training results indicated a strong relationship between job seeking knowledge and job seeking self efficacy. Whereas as contemporary job seeking training focuses on vocational profiling and 'how' to apply for jobs, the results add the potential importance of understanding the 'psychology' behind application and recruitment processes. Implications for programme design, and the role of Work and Organisational Psychology in the community are discussed.

Generations of job seekers has been nurtured to define themselves in terms of Person : Job Fit, a... more Generations of job seekers has been nurtured to define themselves in terms of Person : Job Fit, and other empirical markers of suitability. However, through environmental demand, gradual changes in organisations and selection processes have resulted in a more holistic interpretation of candidate suitability. The recall, identification, self recognition, and awareness of personal virtues and strengths are as much a feature of recruitment as are qualifications and experience. This shift in organisational entry is totally congruent with the tenets of positive psychology. This paper proposes to outline the application of positive psychology in a reemployment coaching context. The rationale for the selection of supporting psychological theories / concepts, and the relevant practitioner skills applied in the promotion of learned optimism amongst the job seeking unemployed.
