This book focuses on the death of a loved one;however, people carry many kinds of grief-related memories. Grief also attends the loss of an intact family because of divorce, or the mysterious disappearance of a pet, or a parent's descent into dementia, or parents whose children sustain brain damage in an accident, or a sibling who develops a serious mental illness. Sometimes the death of a perpetrator of trauma or violence triggers grief in a victim. Some people experience collective grief, such as members of a community whose homes have been destroyed by a wildfire, or the doctors and nurses who coped with the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sometimes we believe that we are not entitled to grieve less conspicuous losses, or we think that others will judge our grief as illegitimate. We grieve because we remember when things were different. Grievers tend to convey facts and information about loss, such as when and how someone died, instead of their lived experience of grief and how it has affected them. The book includes disguised narratives of clients, friends, acquaintances, strangers, and students who have shared their emotional memories of grief-related experiences. Each chapter begins with author's own lived experience of loss, and throughout the book it integrates into the discussion many other experiences. Throughout the chapters, it introduces readers to diverse opinions on many issues concerning grief and how people psychologically engage with loss. KidTalk With Dr. Mary—The Call-In Talk Show Just for Kids is one such medium created to promote emotional awareness and social competency in young people. The potential for the format of the talk show to be used in community-based preemptive intervention programs is discussed in various contexts. Anecdotal material is provided to illustrate ways in which the program has led children and preteens to link the need for assistance, catharsis, objectivity, and a corrective emotional experience with a query to a psychologist, thus making psychology a household word—just for kids.
