Iran ignores deadline... UN ignores responsibility.

Iran, aptly termed by President Bush as an Axis of Evil, continues down its well-trodden path of Western antagonism, Islamic imperialism, and toward the ability to hold Western nations hostage with nuclear weapons.

From Reuters:
Iran failed to stop nuclear work by a Thursday deadline, the U.N. atomic watchdog said, clearing the way to possible sanctions by the Security Council due to Western fears Tehran could be trying to make atom bombs.

A confidential report of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), leaked to Reuters, said Iran had resumed enriching small amounts of uranium in recent days. The agency said lack of Iranian cooperation had blocked its probes.

"Iran has not suspended its enrichment related activities," the report said. "Iran has not addressed the long outstanding verification issues or provided the necessary transparency to remove uncertainties associated with some of its activities."

...Some U.S. allies in the European Union had asked for talks with Tehran to explore its reply instead of resorting quickly to sanctions at the Council, Western diplomats said.

...Moscow and Beijing, keen to protect energy contracts with Tehran and seeing no imminent threat from its nuclear program, have urged diplomacy.

...EU nations, for their part, prefer to find a compromise with Iran rather than isolate one of their biggest oil suppliers.
We won't see broad multilateral sanctions against Iran, at least not anytime soon. Keep an eye on this, as you will see the UN in all its glory: an inept and unwilling organization that is more symbolic than literal.

The UN threatens our homes

An International Treaty is a threat to your family even if the UN can't directly reach into your living room. 192 nations have adopted something called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. If our the US congress ratifies this abomination, it will become the "Supreme Law of the Land." Treaties do that. No this is not the twilight zone and unfortunately it's not new.

This nonsense has been bandied about by intellectuals and globalists since at least the late 1980s. The treaty itself does away with parental rights by giving children civil, economic and social rights on an individual level. Parents who failed "respect" these could be subject to whatever reporting, referrals and disciplinary measures the UN seems to think is appropriate. The Clinton Administration brought this treaty to us, and it was not ratified because some senators wisely saw it for what it was and refused to do so, stating it would undermine parental rights.

So, if the senate doesn't ratify it then it is over, right? No. I would hope that the congress would feel the heat enough not to do such a thing, but this does not mean that our families are safe from this nefarious influence. The US court system has been making decisions based on "customary international law." This practice occurs when there is no case law or clear interpretation of the constitution (or more accurately, wingnuts from the legal fringe don't like how the former will affect their case) and they look to international case law and treaties to interpret the US constitution. It sounds totally absurd, but it is still dangerous because it's still being done.
"In the 2004 case Roper v. Simmons, a majority on the U.S. Supreme Court noted that the execution of juvenile offenders violated several international treaties, including the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, and stated that the overwhelming weight of international opinion against the juvenile death penalty provides confirmation for the court's own conclusion that the death penalty is disproportional punishment for offenders younger than 18.

Additionally, a change in the makeup of the Senate could result in the ratification of the treaty. The consequences of these actions could be devastating for the American family because it would mean that any state law relating to education, the family, adoption and dozens of other issues could be nullified by a judge."
How would this affect your family? In Belgium a couple has been accused of neglect for schooling their child at home. They didn't sign the papers which promised to abide by the UN Convention. If the courts convict this couple, a like minded lawyer or judge in a case in the US could make a similar ruling citing the dubious "international law" arguement. And this is just if the Convention is not ratified here.

Trust the UN.......to Turn a Blind Eye to the Hezbollah

If you didn't catch this over at Hot Air, you need to read the post about the Hezbollah building a bunker, within 20 yards of a UN post!
...Sky News went into a Hezbollah bunker along with the IDF. The scale of construction on this particular bunker/tunnel complex is immense. The reporter notes that it had a sense of permanence about it–the walls were painted, there was a kitchen and what the IDF says were bomb-making materials. And the whole complex was within a couple hundred yards of a UN post. And there’s another smaller bunker within about 20 yards of a UN post.

I would say it’s unbelievable, but we all know that that just isn’t the case. The UN watching while terrorists dig in is all too believable.

It is believable that the anti-Israel UN would turn a blind eye to terrorists building a bunker next them, and then whine when Israel bomb UN posts. This is just another great example of how the "...equal rights...of nations large and small..." is a crock of bovine excretement. The UN needs to amend their charter to read "...equal rights...of Terrorist nations large and small (except Israel)...".

UNIFIL in Lebanon

Jeff Goldstein at Protein Wisdom has a few choice words for the UN and UNIFIL considering their actions during the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict:

Astounding. Frightening. Despicable. And yet, these are the people who claim a mandate to police the world. From The Weekly Standard, “What did you do in the war, UNIFIL?”:

DURING THE RECENT month-long war between Hezbollah and Israel, U.N. “peacekeeping” forces made a startling contribution: They openly published daily real-time intelligence, of obvious usefulness to Hezbollah, on the location, equipment, and force structure of Israeli troops in Lebanon.

...So long as we continue to allow the rhetorical of emotionalism frame the international narratives of war, the group most willing to exploit that emotionalism—whether through doctored photographs, appeals to the moral authority, disinformation campaigns, scapegoating, and speciou equivocations—has the upper hand in the “hearts and minds” battle.
Read the whole thing. Disgusting.

Care to Join?

UN Deputy Secretary General Mark Malloch Brown, on D-day anniversary June 6, 2006:

"Exacerbating matters is the widely held perception... that the U.S. tends to hold on to maximalist positions, when it could be finding middle ground...

Too much unchecked UN-bashing and stereotyping over too many years...

We need the U.S. to support this agenda--and support it not just in a whisper, but in a coast to coast shout that pushes back the critics domestically...

Who will campaign in 2008 for a new multilateral national security?"

Kofi Annan stands by Brown's speech which was sponsored by leftist groups: The Century Foundation and the Center for American Progress.

In light of this, other recent events, and a culmination of behavior the United Nations has displayed toward the United States, a message to the UN needs to be sent.

If you are displeased with the UN, please criticize them as liberally as possible.
