Herman Achille[2] Van Rompuy (Dutch: [ˈɦɛɾmɑn vɑn ˈɾɔmpœy] ( listen); born 31 October 1947) is the first full-time Preses o the European Cooncil. This is a poseetion appyntit bi the European Cooncil. A Belgian politeecian o the Christian Democratic an Flemish pairty, Van Rompuy served as the 66t prime meenister o Belgium frae 30 December 2008 till his predecessor (Yves Leterme) succeedit him on 25 November 2009. He haes the Grand Cordon o the Order o Leopold.
On 19 November 2009[3] Van Rompuy wis electit bi the members o the European Cooncil as the first full-time Preses o the European Cooncil unner the Treaty o Lisbon.[4] He wis appyntit tae chair the institution for the period stairtin frae 1 December 2009 till 31 Mey 2012,[5][6] tho he anly teuk up his poseetion offeecially on 1 Januar 2010.[7] On 1 Mairch 2012 Herman Van Rompuy wis re-electit bi the heids o state or govrenment o the 27 EU member states. His seicont (an last) term is set tae last twa an a hauf years, frae 1 Juin 2012 tae 30 November 2014.[8] He wis succeedit bi Donald Tusk on 1 December 2014.
