As candidate and as president, through innumerable actions and statements, Barack Obama consistently defines black masculinity in terms of personal responsibility, as performed in the family, profession, community, and society. This principle, which has profound consequences for politics and policy, is perhaps most fully expressed in the president's 2013 Morehouse College commencement address. Setting Obama's gender-race ideology in context-examining it as a statement of African American political thought and politics made by a president whose realization of his political ambitions depended on a white majority electorate-reveals some of the challenges confronting the men and women whose identities will redefine the U.S. presidency so that it is no longer exclusively white or exclusively male.

Relying on in-depth interviews with first and second generation Trinidadians and Jamaicans in New York and Los Angeles, as well as participant observations, the dissertation finds that Afro-Caribbean group attachments are influenced by group reputation in the public consciousness. As such, Afro-Caribbeans utilize culture as a mechanism for navigating ethnic, racial and country of origin attachments simultaneously. Multiple attachments and the emphasis on culture inform politi...

Through a comparative study of Jamaican and Trinidadian immigrants in New York and Los Angeles, this paper proposes a study that uses social context to develop the way political science discusses identity, culture and political engagement. It examines the role that 3 specific elements of social context (religious institutions, media and the neighborhood) play in the development of political frames, racial/ethnic identity and political engagement. In an effort to ground the theoretical approach of this paper with respect to racial/ethnic identity in current events it also proposes an examination of the campaign of Barack Obama and the role that identity played in Afro-Caribbean political engagement. Moreover, in addition to examining the impact of social context on traditional engagement, this study also investigates how cultural practices operate as forms of political engagement as well.
