In ten years of teaching I have only ever taught ESL learners and this environment has moulded my views on teaching and learning methods. This justification is important in establishing my epistemological position. It has been within the contexts of Northern China, the UAE, and Brunei that my teaching methods developed. The cultural constraints and educational barriers in each country, such as teaching to a test, cultural values regarding education, lack of resources (especially in terms of technology), and simultaneous differing teaching environments had a direct impact on the methods I employ today. The synthesis of my knowledge, skills, context, and personal values have lead me down the path of the pragmatic constructivist.
