This paper describes an ongoing design project relating to online news and how alterations to new... more This paper describes an ongoing design project relating to online news and how alterations to news stories are hidden from the reader. As the delivery and consumption of news content online continues to overtake other channels in reader numbers and market penetration, so methods of transparency and reliability developed over centuries continue also to be tested by digital media. We have carried out content analysis on existing stories and examined how news organisations and channels handle rapidly evolving news stories. We have proceeded to develop low fidelity prototypes and an interaction model to test our design approach. The outcomes are in production and will result in a digital artifact that reveals editorial changes to news items. These changes will be made visible within the browser. The implications of the project relate to the wider question of news truth-telling, trust and online news credibility.
I argue in this paper for the value of adopting some specific design approaches when creating slo... more I argue in this paper for the value of adopting some specific design approaches when creating slow technology, how to create long lasting relationships with technology, and how to design reflective or slow digital interactions. The problem I have addressed is how to design for long lasting technologies with changing users. My approach is informed by activity theory, which provides a theoretical and methodological perspective while design principles inform ideas of process, structure and interaction. The contribution to HCI is in the view of slow technology as demanding a unique set of design skills.

This position paper explores the notion of a material design basis for digital sociality and sugg... more This position paper explores the notion of a material design basis for digital sociality and suggests ways of expressing and experiencing virtual social actions independent of any particular technical platform, interaction model or interface. The physical experience of social interactions in space offers some guide to the expression of social connection. Digital habitats and information ecosystems have their own material properties apart from their metaphorical representation as interfaces, while texture, narrative, and contextual mapping are a guide to the creation of new informationally-mediated social experiences. Designers are beginning to think more widely about embodiment, materiality and what the implications of socially generated data might be for the design of experiences. This paper suggests a connection between physical and virtual artefacts, an associated view of materiality, and some key principles for shaping social interaction design spaces.
This position paper discusses ways of defining a living curriculum, and experiences of teaching H... more This position paper discusses ways of defining a living curriculum, and experiences of teaching HCI at postgraduate level. The moral and political implications of a global community resource are also explored. Current ways of delivering an HCI curriculum in a university context are subject to changes through technology, access, and funding. The development of a living curriculum for HCI education should include ways of accounting for diversity, accountability and distribution. The characteristics of such a system include its ability to respond to transformation in content, method, and requirements.
Autonomy is important for individuals, for social groups, and for society. This paper proposes wa... more Autonomy is important for individuals, for social groups, and for society. This paper proposes ways of designing for autonomous experiences in software environments. Machine autonomy allows data capture, automated categorisation, and hierarchical ordering, human autonomy means authorial control and the freedom to choose how we wish to use a system. Design principles can help establish an operating standard for practice in this research context. Systems that feature; the ability to make meaningful selections, permit output across media types, and the construction of coherent stories about what we do in software environments all imply a level of personal and social autonomy.
