Prof. Steven Moore teaches Sustainability at the Smith School of Business, Queen’s University, in Canada. His international teaching includes the Bader International Study Centre, Herstmonceux Castle, U.K., and Queen’s courses in Environmental Policy in Costa Rica.

Steven also teaches three courses (Sustainability, Environmental Policy, and Ecological Economics) at the Queen’s School of Environmental Studies and has been voted Student’s Choice Professor of the Year in Environmental Studies in 2010-11 for Sustainability and in 2014-15 for Ecological Economics, and has been nominated for the W.J. Barnes Teaching Award - the Arts & Science Undergraduate
Society's Highest Tribute to an Individual for Teaching Excellence.

For Ducere Business School (www.Ducere.edu.au), he teaches in the MBA and Bachelor’s programmes at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the University of New England, and Torrens University in Australia, where he has received the 2021 Teaching Merit Certificate.

He has run an off-the-grid organic farm on solar power, designed and built an earth-sheltered home incorporating many sustainable features and has over 100 popular publications to his credit in the fields of environment and energy.

He owns and operates Moore Partners (a 20 kW microFIT solar photovoltaic energy producer).

This course includes a combination of lectures, assignments and case studies that are designed to... more This course includes a combination of lectures, assignments and case studies that are designed to introduce students to the ecological critique of the standard neo-classical economic analysis of environmental degradation and depletion. Students will also be asked to consider the more holistic approach to calculating the costs and benefits of economic activity proposed by ecological economists. Do you think a societies' economic system owes you a living? Of course it does, that's what a society is all about. Interdependence, caring, compassion, cooperation, regeneration. Otherwise the economy is just a dog-eat-dog free-for-all that destroys our life support systems. And see where that has gotten us. Ecology-the study of interactions of an organism with its external world Economics-the behavior of individuals, households, and organizations (called economic actors, players, or agents), when they manage or use scarce resources, which have alternative uses, to achieve desired ends. Deep ecology-technological fixes (e.g., recycling, increased automotive efficiency, large-scale renewable energy "farms") based on the same consumption-oriented values and methods of the industrial economy is not the goal. We must redesign our human systems based on values and methods that truly preserve the ecological and cultural diversity of natural systems. Can the world be saved? Absolutely. Can it be saved within the current system of deregulated monopolistic capitalism? Not a chance. "Freedom from unions and collective bargaining means the freedom to suppress wages. Freedom from regulation is the freedom to poison rivers, endanger workers, and charge unjust rates of interest. Freedom from taxes means freedom from the distribution of wealth that lifts people out of poverty." George Monbiot Let's open our minds, admit our prejudices, abandon the status quo, and ask some important questions.

Determining appropriate feed-in tariff rates to promote biomass-to-electricity generation in Eastern Ontario, Canada

On-site data collection, interviews, and financial models were used to determine the feed-in tari... more On-site data collection, interviews, and financial models were used to determine the feed-in tariff (FIT) rate required to encourage investment in the generation of electricity from currently unused biomass from the Eastern Ontario forest industry. A financial model was adapted and run to determine the net present value, internal rate of return, and payback period associated with a 15 MW biomass-to-electricity facility. The analysis suggests that Ontario should consider a stronger incentive than the recently-offered CDN$ 0.13 kW À 1 h À 1 for biomass-to-electricity. If no customer for heat generated from the plant can be found, FIT rates between CDN$ 0.17-0.22 kW À 1 h À 1 are necessary to achieve a 15% internal rate of return and a simple payback of approximately 5 yr; achieving a price of CDN$ 0.013 kW À 1 of thermal output still requires elevated FIT rates between CDN$ 0.15-0.21 kW À 1 h À 1 to meet economic performance criteria. Other barriers, particularly regulations regarding the use of operating engineers in steam plants, should also be addressed to facilitate development of biomass-to-electricity. Without these changes, it is likely that biomass will be significantly under-used and will not contribute to the renewable energy goals of Ontario.
