Gregory of Nyssa’s (Relational) Doctrine of Grace as an Ontology of History in Ecumenical Perspective

The paper shows the relevance of Gregory of Nyssa’s Trinitarian ontology for Ecumenism. In fact, ... more The paper shows the relevance of Gregory of Nyssa’s Trinitarian ontology for Ecumenism. In fact, the Cappadocian’s rereading of the relationship between ontology and history makes it possible to combine dynamics and being in his reading of divinization as epektasis. This seems to be relevant from the perspective of Luther studies, as it shows that Tuomo Mannermaa’s interpretation of the Reformer’s thought could be interpreted as relational and not merely dialectical. In the end, it seems that the research on a true theological ontology and the deepening of the theology of history can be useful for a better understanding of Luther’s intention and inspiration in his doctrine on grace.

Las lecturas modernas del Concilio de Nicea (325) muestran cómo el homousious debe ser considerad... more Las lecturas modernas del Concilio de Nicea (325) muestran cómo el homousious debe ser considerado una invasión indebida de la filosofía helénica en el espacio de la pureza del dato bíblico. En el contexto actual, sin embargo, podemos leer tal juicio como anacrónico, ya que la oposición entre exégesis y metafísica carece de fundamento histórico. El propio pensamiento de Platón nació como exégesis de los mitos, por lo que los padres conciliares se vieron en la necesidad de resolver una tensión inherente a la teología de Orígenes, vinculada precisamente a la relación entre su exégesis y el pensamiento metafísico heredado del contexto griego. La opción imperial de favorecer una mera ortopraxis resultó infructuosa y así, en el transcurso del siglo iv, los Padres Capadocios, en particular Gregorio de Nisa, tuvieron que conciliar la metafísica y la exégesis con un nuevo pensamiento ortodoxo, a la luz del cual la krisis (juicio) operada por el Concilio de Nicea adquiere un valor nuevo y potencialmente muy útil en el contexto posmoderno.

In order to understand the theological value of the last part of the AdAbl it is necessary to dra... more In order to understand the theological value of the last part of the AdAbl it is necessary to draw out a synthetic sketch of the history of Trinitarian dogma and the differences of the Eastern and Western approaches. Gregory's pneumatology is one of the highest moment of his theological reflection. W. Jaeger held it as the eminent expression of Christian humanism, destined to culminate in sanctity, which has the Holy Spirit as its principle. The role of the Son in the procession of the Holy Spirit necessarily leads to the theme of unity. Gregory conceives the supreme unity not under the sign of the Father, but under that of the Spirit. Gregory affirms that he who unites the Trinity is the Spirit; at the same time he affirms that it is also the Spirit who unites Christians: the unity of the Church is founded in the unity of the Trinity.Keywords: AdAbl ; Gregory; Holy Spirit; supreme unity

Gregory's pneumatology is one of the highest moment of his theological reflection. W. In this volume, Giulio Maspero explores both the ontology and the epistemology of the Cappadocian... more In this volume, Giulio Maspero explores both the ontology and the epistemology of the Cappadocians from historical and speculative points of view. He shows how the Cappadocians developed a real Trinitarian Ontology through their reshaping of the Aristotelian category of relation, which they rescued from the accidental dimension and inserted into the immanence of the one divine and eternal substance. This perspective made possible a new conception of individuation. No longer exclusively linked to substantial difference, as in classical Greek philosophy, the concept was instead founded on the mutual relation of the divine Persons. The Cappadocians' metaphysical reshaping was also closely linked to a new epistemological conception based on apophaticism, which shattered the logical closure of their opponents, and anticipated results that modern research has subsequently highlighted, Bridging the late antique philosophy with Patristics, Maspero' s study allows us to find the relational traces within the Trinity in the world and in history.
