I am not aware of any books published in English on this topic prior to this time, although at least a few books have devoted a chapter or so to top management teams before.

Every day dozens of opportunities to create and innovate pass us by because we cannot see them, we fail to recognize their value, or we can't identify the resources for acting on them. For example, each time we are in the presence of another person but fail to engage in creative conversation, possibilities of cross-fertilization are lost.

Leadership represents a system of guiding influences that may be embodied in people at different levels of the organization or in the cultures and support systems of the organization. I may mark a 3 on a scale of 5 to indicate how much autonomy I perceive in doing my work, whereas you may mark a 4. Does that difference of 1 point mean that you possesses more autonomy, perceive more autonomy, define autonomy differently, or define a response of 4 differently than I do?

Step-by-step instructions, discussion ideas, and a number of variations are also presented.

Other people would have lists that differed somewhat, depending on their disciplines and concerns. But heaping all of those together and distilling the essence is likely to result in something that includes the points I make here. I make these points, because they directly involve work teams and other forms of collaboration.

This book by Marie McIntyre, Management Team: Five Key Strategies for Maximizing Group Performance, will be published in May by Jossey-Bass. There are so many positive things that I can say about this book that it is very difficult to condense the endorsement into a brief review.

Although this is true to some extent, you probably would not be reading this book if you thought there were no principles underlying team success. Our experience leads us to conclude that there are principles to follow if teams are to succeed, but their implementation may vary, according to each organization's culture.
