The culture in which we live has a significant impact about how we interpret gender. It refers to social, cultural, and psychological characteristics or traits that are applied to males and females depending on their social background. It is not to be confused with sex, which relates to the biological factors that differentiate a boy from a girl based on chromosomes and body parts. As a result, sex determines whether a person is male or female, while gender determines whether a person is masculine or feminine. The media plays a role in the development of gender stereotypes of children and young adults. In the mass media, there is a misrepresentation between male and female roles. You'll notice in some films and shows that a woman's gender role and her character is to be a simple housewife who takes care of her children, while men character on the other hand, are supposed to be competent and the family's leader, and he should be the one who acts and cares for the family's needs. Other thing female traits should be passive, caring, and subordinate, while men traits should be commanding, aggressive, and assertive, according to the mainstream. As a result, you would believe that men are given more opportunities than women because men are tougher and capable of performing tasks that women cannot. Women are underrepresented in film and are portrayed differently than men, according to studies on gender stereotypes in media. Based on their success, men are depicted as having higher and longer-lasting career status, while women are portrayed as having lower and shorter career status.
