INTRODUCTION
Who thinks that the snare drum rudiments aren’t applicable to popular mu-
sic are mistaken. The jazz musicians did and do this wonderfully. Rudiments don’t serve only
to the marching bands. And who thinks that they can’t be applicable to Brazilian music are
mistaken too. This is John Grant’s dream. He has been developing this idea for years working
with the samba scholls percussion.
John is my master. With him I learn the technique and that’s because of him
that I became an obsessed madman. Who knows John knows what I mean. This little work, that
I present to you now, is fruit of this obsession. The syncopation rhythmic figure that I used as a
study is found in any genre of Brazilian music. To it I adapted some rudiments and, I believe,
the result got very interesting. I hope that you think so too. John is right.
