Entering the gloomy, decaying house, Rita finds Agnès in a catatonic state, while every corner of the home seems to hold an ancient, unmoving breath. The two women sit down for a meal, and Agnès proposes a Shangai match, a test of skill and patience. Stick by stick, Rita feels her vitality slipping away, while Agnès, rejuvenated, seems to grow younger before her eyes. When Rita realizes that Anna is not Agnès's real daughter, a disturbing truth is revealed: in this house, time and youth do not follow ordinary rules. Trapped in a dark cycle, Rita wastes away as Agnès, now youthful, embarks on a new life. Years later, another young woman will cross that threshold, unaware of the fate awaiting her.
