Lauren lets her know they played chess through the mail. Rose on the next day figures out that her Grandfather played the same way in the letters compared to her memory of him and thinks of using the letters as a way to finally beat her Grandfather at chess. The day goes by and she is focused on the game in order to get out of this grief that she's been stuck in. Lauren sees her playing and gets concerned as she doesn't think this is a good way to cope. Rose almost finishes the game but finds out there are no more letters. She thinks about making moves for him but stops when she realizes she may not have any moves she can make without ruining her chances of winning while also keeping it true to how her Grandfather played.
