Before starting her movie career, she worked on Broadway, where she was noticed by movie producers and offered the part of Rose-Marie. In the mid-1930's when her career had already taken off, she co-starred in a number of movies with Franchot Tone, with who she would enter into a brief marriage. The glamorous Joan Crawford would eventually emerge in the movie Susan and God. That movie would lead to her Oscar winning performance in the title role of Mildred Pierce.
