In one of the papers he finds an advertisement of a correspondence course in "How To Be a Detective." Slim bites. When the instructions arrive he loses no time in practicing his chosen vocation. With his trusty hook and outfit he starts forth to find Mrs. O'Reilly's lost speckled cow; it never occurs to him that the one he finds in Mrs. Hookheimer's backyard is not the one, and he triumphantly delivers the animal to Mrs. O'Reilly and says he found her in her neighbor's backyard, and Mrs. O'Reilly phones the constable. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hookheimer has missed her cow and starts searching; she finds her in Mrs. O'Reilly's yard and leads her home; at home she meets the constable and is arrested. Si Slocum receives a thrashing from Slim when he tries to interfere, and the innocent lady is locked in the jail. When the cowboys finally discover that the detective is responsible for the entire affair they capture him and Mrs. O'Reilly and Mrs. Hookheimer, proceed to turn the tables on their unconscious enemy.
