Mother writes to sister Kate and she invites them to visit her for a few weeks at their house in the woods. Sonny is absorbed in reading the story of "The Three Bears." Shortly after their arrival in the country, all go on a picnic, Sonny and Daddy Jim going fishing after lunch. Sonny tells Teddy Bear, "Perhaps we can find the Three Bears' house by ourselves," and runs off into the forest alone. He wanders along until he sees a little house just like the one described in the story of the Three Bears. It is the home of Hans, a woodcutter, who has gone with his family to the circus. Sonny finds the interior and its furniture fits the story's description exactly and he is highly delighted. Pretty soon he gets awful sleepy and lays down on one of the little beds. Meantime, Bruno, keeper of the bears at the circus, goes to sleep and leaves the cage door open. After nearly scaring the circus patrons out of their wits, the bears wander into the woods and enter the woodcutter's house in search of food. The animals are very tame and Sonny on being awakened, is soon having a great time playing with them. Hearing the bears are loose and Sonny missing, Mother Dear faints, while Daddy rushes nearly frantic with fear, followed by Bruno and a crowd. Sonny is discovered fast asleep with one of the little bears in his arms. Daddy rushes in and picks up the boy almost overcome with joy. Sonny awakes and sleepily tells Daddy, "Not to feel bad because this is the Three Bears' House," and asks to take one of the live Teddy Bears home instead of his make-believe one.
