His style and talent as a letter-writer were already apparent in his first year, since Florence was at war with the Holy See from the spring of 1375 to July 1378, a war in which the missives played a prominent role. In my study, I present how Salutati, through his letters, called the Italian city-states (or Communes) into a common league against the Holy See, how he sought alliances in the nearby kingdoms, what were the roles of the envoys and the letters sent to them, how he urged the individual cities to send military aid and people; in brief, what can be gathered from Salutati’s missives about the first year of this war, and in particular the months of August and September, which form the subject of my thesis. The copies of these often autograph state letters – but sometimes written by an assistant – are preserved in the State Archives of Florence, in registers carefully compiled by the Chancellor.

I examine whether the theme and type of the letter affect the internal structure of the letter and, if so, to what extent and in what way. The classical structure of the letter-salutatio, captatio benevolentiae, narratio, petitio, and conclusio-was generally reduced to three parts in medieval missilis practice. At the time of Salutati this process had not yet ended, so sometimes the classic parts are confused with each other, but it is not rare to find units well separated in the letters. I examined these units in my corpus, which contains twenty-five letters written in Latin.
