Master of Science degree in Architecture and Urban Planning of Politecnico di Torino. Since 1998 he developed an extended experience in transport and urban planning both working for public authorities and for research institutions. Since July 2006 he has been working at SiTI (merged in 2019 in the LINKS Foundation) as project manager, coordinating researches and projects on urban redevelopment. The main recent experiences concern the land use management, the redevelopment of brownfields and the analysis of the link between urban environment and health. He also took part to several European networks and projects.

The transformations undergone by L’Aquila and the territory of Abruzzo impose a re-reading of the institutional framework and of the role that the Plan can have in addressing the conflicts deriving from the physical and social reconstruction of the regional capital. But the joint presence of many and various litigious actors makes it complex to adopt a new season of projects able to make the most of the substantial public financing and to direct this towards agreed models of urban development. Moreover a comparison with the effectiveness of public actions that may be observed in analogous cases in the urban history of L’Aquila makes the picture even more alarming.

In particular, this contribution builds upon the opportunities offered by longitudinal studies — a census-based cohort study following up, prospectively, the mortality and morbidity of the population — as influential sources of data to understand how a “bad” externality can cause different health impacts. The method was tested on the city of Turin — a medium-sized urban agglomeration in North-West Italy — as a case study. To increase usability of accessibility instruments, visualization tools are commonly recognized as the most effective methodology, particularly in those processes involving public stakeholders and non-experts. This paper presents an accessibility Interactive Visualization Tool, named InViTo (Pensa et al., 2013), and its application to an empirical study (i.e. Rome) aiming at exploring the potential usability of the tool in engaging public stakeholders into the assessment of different urban development options (e.g. modifying land-uses, new infrastructures, etc.). From urban renewal to urban regeneration: classification criteria for urban interventions. Turin 1995-2015: evolution of planning tools and approaches

European cities have been affected by urban regeneration interventions in the last few decades, s... more European cities have been affected by urban regeneration interventions in the last few decades, spanning a variety of different types and with different outcomes. This paper describes and analyses possible classification criteria for urban regeneration interventions in order to reach a better understanding of urban regeneration policies and their consequences. A review of the literature on urban regeneration classification criteria reveals that urban regeneration interventions have gradually shifted from being place oriented to being people oriented. In view of this, this paper presents a paradigmatic case study of urban regeneration. The urban transformation of the city of Turin, in northern Italy, from 1995 to 2015 clearly shows the existence of three generations of neighbourhood transformations. The first generation involved mainly physical improvement operations in the area of Spina 2. The second was characterised by social and economic support, as in the regeneration of the historic neighbourhood of San Salvario. Finally, the third generation presented an integrated approach, as in the management of the Urban II programme for the area of Mirafiori Nord, leading to a more contemporary, holistic approach.

This cooperation brought, in each participating country, to the construction of an Action Plan for the definition of the Integrated Environmental Management Strategies for the Functional Urban Areas.

The here proposed modeling system wants to improve the cognitive process through an interactive framework, which combines different data in a complex structure of relations and connections. Each data has assigned a spatial behaviour, which can be described by mathematical formulas of different nature. Furthermore, each element of drawing can be connected to others and produce an attractive or repulsive influence on them. In order to provide awareness on the spatial effect of planning choices, all functions among data within the model can be modified and set by users as decision makers, professionals and experts. Walkable Urban Environments for Wellbeing

As is widely recognized, walking is good for health and improves well-being, and in recent years,... more As is widely recognized, walking is good for health and improves well-being, and in recent years, several studies have analyzed the phenomenon of walkability to assess its effectiveness and to understand the main factors influencing people's choice of walking. In this article, the main issues are taken up as regards the effectiveness of moving on foot as well as the elements of the environment that encourage this type of mobility. However, as we know, not all people are the same, and therefore, the choice of moving on foot is not taken according to the same principles by all categories of citizens. For this reason, this article focuses on a tool, developed in recent years by the authors, that aims to determine levels of walkability (walk index) that can be adapted according to the category of users considered.
