Kim Scipes
I am a long-time rank and file labor activist, who went back to academia and got my Ph.D. at age 51. I work at Purdue University Northwest in Westville, Indiana, USA, as a Professor of Sociology. To date, I've published four books--two monographs--"KMU: Building Genuine Trade Unionism in the Philippines, 1980-1994" (New Day Publishers, 1996); "AFL-CIO's Secret War against Developing Country Workers: Solidarity or Sabotage?" (Lanham, MD, Lexington Books, 2010 hardback, 2011 paperback); an edited collection: "Building Global Labor Solidarity in a Time of Accelerating Globalization" (Chicago: Haymarket Books, 2016), and a compilation of articles, "Building Global Labor Solidarity: Lessons from the Philippines, South Africa, Northwestern Europe, and the United States" (Lanham, MD: Lexington Book, 2021)--and I've published over 240 pieces, including peer-reviewed academic articles, journalistic pieces, editorials and book reviews. I am an active member of the Labor and Labor Movements Section of the American Sociological Association, and served as an elected board member of Research Committee 44 (Labor) of the International Sociological Association from 2006-10.
