It is easier if you think of a flat plate rather than a sphere or cylinder - clearly a plate shields both sides identically from any field on the opposite side. A sphere with a large enough diameter looks a lot like a flat plate close up. I don't think anything qualitative would change between a large and a small sphere. | |
