• Testing environment: Beta Cluster
• Platform: Desktop

ENABLE the new mode

1. On the beta cluster, turn on the New Discussion Tool and the Reply Tool
2. Visit Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing
3. Within the Discussion pages section, "check" the checkbox to the left of the Enable tools for pinging, linking and text formatting when quick replying or quick topic adding. setting

Reply Tool: verify the tools within the new mode work as expected
Exhaustively test the new text editing tools available in the Reply Tool's source mode. Where "exhaustively" means doing things like:

1. Bolding, italicizing and underlining text using the text formatting tools (try invoking via the mouse and keyboard shortcuts)
2. Linking text (try invoking via the mouse and keyboard shortcuts)
3. Pinging another user
4. Doing "1." "2." and "3." and then switching to the tool's visual mode and back again to its source mode
5. Publishing a comment
6. Checking the diffs to ensure no unexpected changes appear, within the comment or elsewhere on the page

2. Within the Discussion pages section, "uncheck" the checkbox to the left of the Enable tools for pinging, linking and text formatting when quick replying or quick topic adding. setting
3. Visit a talk page, open the Reply Tool's source mode
4. Verify NO tools appear above the text input area
5. Open the New Discussion Tool's source mode
6. Verify NO tools appear above the text input area
