Daniel Marty has completed a master degree in Earth Sciences at the University of Basel and a PhD in Palaeontology/Sedimentology at the University of Fribourg focusing on Late Jurassic dinosaur tracks excavated on Highway A16 and neoichnological experiments with human footprints on recent tidal flats.

From 2000 to 2017 he was working as a research palaeontologist at the "Paleontology A16" (Office de la culture, Canton Jura, Switzerland), a unique palaeontological service founded in year 2000, that was in charge of the excavation, documentation, and safeguarding of paleontological heritage along the future course of Swiss federal Highway A16. He was responsible for the excavation, documentation, and scientific research of the dinosaur tracksites, that were uncovered prior to the construction of the highway. He still is involved in research projects related to these and other dinosaur footprint discoveries in collaboration with researchers from Europe and abroad.

Since 2014, Daniel Marty teaches Palaeontology courses at the University of Basel. In 2014 he became chief editor of the Swiss Journal of Palaeontology and in 2018 of the Swiss Journal of Geosciences, both journals being published fully Open Access with SpringerOpen.

Basée à Porrentruy, la Paléontologie A16 est un projet pilote de paléontologie autoroutière, fina... more Basée à Porrentruy, la Paléontologie A16 est un projet pilote de paléontologie autoroutière, financé à hauteur de 95% par l'Office fédéral des routes et de 5% par la République et Canton du Jura. Sa mission, de 2000 à 2018, se concentre sur le tracé de la route nationale A16 Transjurane, long de 24,675 km. La Paléontologie A16 a prospecté et fouillé 64 sites des sections autoroutières 1, 2, 3, 7 et 8 entre Boncourt et Porrentruy-principalement sur le plateau de Courtedoux-ainsi qu'entre Delémont et Choindez. Les découvertes paléontologiques sont le fruit de cette activité de terrain de grande envergure, avec des fouilles contrôlées menées de 2005 à 2011, grâce au soutien financier conséquent de l'Office fédéral des routes. La mission principale de la Paléontologie A16 consiste à sauvegarder ces nombreuses découvertes, à les documenter, les gérer en collection, les exploiter scientifiquement et, finalement, transmettre l'ensemble de cet héritage à la République et Canton du Jura. Les Catalogues du patrimoine paléontologique jurassien-A16 sont le reflet de la devise de la Paléontologie A16 : Sauvegarder, Étudier, Transmettre. The tracks of giant theropods (<i>Jurabrontes curtedulensis</i> ichnogen. & ichnosp. nov.) from the Late Jurassic of NW Switzerland: palaeoecological & palaeogeographical implications

<i>Jurabrontes curtedulensis</i>, a new ichnogenus and species of Late Jurassic giant... more <i>Jurabrontes curtedulensis</i>, a new ichnogenus and species of Late Jurassic giant theropod dinosaur track is described based on very well-preserved and morphologically-distinct tracks, all carefully excavated along federal highway A16 (Canton Jura, NW Switzerland). All trackways were systematically documented including parameter measurements, descriptions, outline drawings, orthophotos and laserscans. <i>Jurabrontes</i> is characterised by sub-equal track length and width, a small anterior triangle, weak mesaxony, three blunt digits (dII-III-IV) with pronounced (sub)triangular claw marks, a rounded heel, and clear phalangeal pad impressions. The combination of features of <i>Jurabrontes</i> is typical for a theropod (and not ornithopod) trackmaker. <i>Jurabrontes</i> is compared to other similar ichnotaxa and unnamed tracks of large theropods from the Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous, from which it is clearly different. The sheer size of the largest tracks, that are amongst the largest worldwide and of similar size to <i>Tyrannosauripus</i> from the Late Cretaceous, suggests a 'megalosaurid' or large allosaurid theropod as a trackmaker. The presence of such large theropod tracks in tidal-flat deposits of the Jura carbonate platform and associated with small to large sauropod tracks has important palaeoecological implications for the dinosaur community and for palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographical reconstructions. <i>Jurabrontes</i> - urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:B482D2AF-637A-4B2D-8B0B-FEAD54CA2A26 <i>J. curtedulensis</i>- urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:30D45944-5A2B-45E1-89B9-20298E475D51

Dinosaur tracks in South America are well-known since the seminal work of Leonardi (1989, 1994), ... more Dinosaur tracks in South America are well-known since the seminal work of Leonardi (1989, 1994), although reports from Argentina were known earlier (e.g., Alonso, 1980). The first account of dinosaur tracks from Bolivia is that of Branisa (1968), who briefly mentioned surfaces from the El Molino Formation of Toro Toro. In 1994, Leonardi figured four different Cretaceous localities with dinosaur tracks, i.e., Toro Toro, Parotani (not verified), Arampampa (not verified) and Camargo (not verified). The footprints of ankylosaurs, theropods and sauropods from the Toro Toro site were figured by Leonardi (1994), but a detailed description of the site is missing. Furthermore, the presence of dromaeosaurid footprints at Toro Toro was mentioned by Apesteguía et al. (2007, 2011). In 1994, Jose Hugo Heymann (geologist) and Klaus Schuett (at that time Director of Tourism in Sucre) discovered tracks in the Cal Orck'o Quarry and brought them to the attention of the first author. Sa mission, de 2000 à 2018, se concentre sur le tracé de la route nationale A16 Transjurane, long de 24,675 km. La Paléontologie A16 a prospecté et fouillé 64 sites des sections autoroutières 1, 2, 3, 7 et 8 entre Boncourt et Porrentruy-principalement sur le plateau de Courtedoux-ainsi qu'entre Delémont et Choindez. Les découvertes paléontologiques sont le fruit de cette activité de terrain de grande envergure, avec des fouilles contrôlées menées de 2005 à 2011, grâce au soutien financier conséquent de l'Office fédéral des routes. La mission principale de la Paléontologie A16 consiste à sauvegarder ces nombreuses découvertes, à les documenter, les gérer en collection, les exploiter scientifiquement et, finalement, transmettre l'ensemble de cet héritage à la République et Canton du Jura. Les Catalogues du patrimoine paléontologique jurassien-A16 sont le reflet de la devise de la Paléontologie A16 : Sauvegarder, Étudier, Transmettre. Qu'ils soient utiles pour la mémoire de cette activité unique, pour de futures études scientifiques et pour la gestion pérenne de ce patrimoine-d'importance nationale-, dont la responsabilité incombe à la République et Canton du Jura. Dinosaur tracks in South America are well-known since the seminal work of Leonardi (1989, 1994), ... more Dinosaur tracks in South America are well-known since the seminal work of Leonardi (1989, 1994), although reports from Argentina were known earlier (e.g., Alonso, 1980). The first account of dinosaur tracks from Bolivia is that of Branisa (1968), who briefly mentioned surfaces from the El Molino Formation of Toro Toro. In 1994, Leonardi figured four different Cretaceous localities with dinosaur tracks, i.e., Toro Toro, Parotani (not verified), Arampampa (not verified) and Camargo (not verified). The footprints of ankylosaurs, theropods and sauropods from the Toro Toro site were figured by Leonardi (1994), but a detailed description of the site is missing. Furthermore, the presence of dromaeosaurid footprints at Toro Toro was mentioned by Apesteguía et al. (2007, 2011). In 1994, Jose Hugo Heymann (geologist) and Klaus Schuett (at that time Director of Tourism in Sucre) discovered tracks in the Cal Orck'o Quarry and brought them to the attention of the first author.
