As the global landscape continues to expand, the significance of incorporating ICT in education has grown exponentially. It is crucial for teachers to possess the ability to employ ICT effectively in order to integrate their students' learning experiences and adequately prepare them for the challenges they will face in the future. While the integration of ICT in education offers benefits such as the creation of effective lessons, classroom management, and improved stakeholder communication, its successful implementation hinges upon teachers' possession of the requisite skills, knowledge, and willingness. The objective of this study is to evaluate the attitudes and preparedness of Tamil medium teachers in Sri Lanka with regard to their utilization of ICT in...

The Concern-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) was employed as theoretical and conceptual framework underlying the study. An explanatory mixed method design was used for data collection. The respondents for quantitative approach on Stages of Concern (SoC) consisted of 311 geography teachers from secondary schools in Kalutara district, Sri Lanka. A total of nine (9) geography teachers who shown their high concerns in the survey was selected for the qualitative methods on Levels of Use (LoU) and Innovation Configuration (IC). The study used adapted instruments such as Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ), basic interview protocol and innovation configuration map from the actual instruments of CBAM. The data obtained from questionnaires was analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), inferential statistics (independence t-test and one way ANOVA) and percentiles profiles. While data obtained from interviews and classroom observations of geography teachers in terms of their LoU and IC of the curricular innovation were analyzed based on the CBAM guidelines. The findings from analysis of SoCQ showed teachers remained at the initial SoC over the implementation of the 5E instructional model. The analysis across group of teachers in terms of medium of instruction, location, school types, age, qualifications and experience revealed significant differences in their SoC regarding the 5E model. The results from the interviews revealed that geography teachers overall use of the innovation ranged from LoU II-preparation to LoU IV A-routine, whilst many remained at LoU II-preparation. Similarly, the geography teachers differed in LoU based on their medium of instruction, location, school types, experiences and academic qualifications. The classroom observations showed that many teachers did not reach acceptable level of teaching in using the 5E model. The study suggested several intervening strategies to take geography teachers to the higher SoC and LoU as well as motivate teachers to practice at the ideal level of teaching using the 5E model. The study also extended application of CBAM using variables medium of instruction, types of school and teachers’ age in evaluating curriculum reforms.

The objectives were to examine whether there is any relationship between teachers’ job satisfaction and intrinsic and extrinsic factors. A survey was carried out to identify teachers’ attitudes towards their careers. Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Data was collected from 93 teachers working in the most difficult schools in the Puttalam Education Zone, through a self-developed, pre-tested questionnaire. The study sample was analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics. It was found that the majority of teachers were women and married. It is significant that more than 80% of teachers working in the most difficult schools have less than 10 years of teaching experience. There is a significant relationship between job satisfaction and intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Bi-v...

The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) was used to identify teachers' Stages of Concern (SoC). The respondents consisted of 303 geography teachers from secondary schools in Kalutara district for the survey on Stages of Concern. The study used questionnaire adapted from the actual instruments of CBAM. Data for SoC was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (mean. standard deviation, t-test, One-Way ANOVA). The analysis of the SoC across group of teachers in terms of their types of school revealed there were significant differences mainly in personal, management, consequence and collaboration. The results suggested all teachers are conscious about the 5E implementation. Alternative strategies are needed to push forward the teachers from the stage of personal concerns to task concerns and impact concerns to ensure success of the curriculum reforms.

School-based teacher development programmes in Sri Lanka have been implemented at the school level recently. The study aimed to find out the status of awareness about SBTD and the participation of teachers in the SBTD programme. In addition, it also aimed to identify the nature of activities done in schools under the SBTD programme. The study employed a survey research design and the collected data from a sample of 48 teachers selected randomly from Mathugama Education Zone in Sri Lanka. Frequency and percentage used for analysis for data. Data analysis showed that teachers in the zone were aware of the school-based development and its various activities implemented at their schools. However, there was a lack of teacher participation in some activities where teachers might get hands-on experiences related to their profession. Therefore, the researchers recommended that school principals ensure teachers' involvement in the SBTD activities by finding out the reasons behind the lack of participation.

Multimode RTLA is slightly suited to the students of secondary and tertiary education. Nevertheless, it is questionable to use with primary school children whose learning is designed mostly child-centred. In addition, it is vital to investigate teachers' readiness and training and access to facilities for conducting remote learning activities. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate Primary school teachers' perception towards RTLA during the lockdown period in Sri Lanka. This study was employed a survey research design, and data were collected using a google form-based questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 40 items to collect teachers' demographic information, facilities and training available to them, attitudes towards RTLA, teaching methods and techniques they used, and participation of parents and students in...

This study was conducted as a survey. Using the exponential non-discriminative snowball sampling technique, data were collected from 613 school students through a questionnaire administered as a Google Form. Data were analyzed as mean values, standard deviations, and percentages. Analysis of data revealed that majority of respondents (92%) were well aware of the various RLA. Majority of the respondents (62.6%) used mobile internet and 69.5% used prepaid services. The main challenges they faced were related to affordability, heavy load of educational content presented through RLA, and concerns on cyber security when engaging with RLA. To make opportunities for learning more accessible to learners, it is recommended that mobile data be made available to school students at low costs and a...

It is continuously reported that the level of participation of the Muslim community in higher education, especially among male students, is lower than that in other communities in Sri Lanka. A comparison of the involvement of the Muslim community in Sri Lankan university education based on gender shows that male students’ university entrance rate is lower than that of female students. The main purpose of this study was to explore the level of Muslim male students’ participation in higher education. To achieve this purpose, the following objectives were formulated: to identify the status of Muslim male students’ participation in higher education, to examine the perception of Muslim male students on pursuing higher education and to find out the reasons for their low level of participation. The respondents consisted of 471 student-teachers from seven study centres of Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Programme of the Open University of Sri Lanka. The study employed an adapted questionnaire based on the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale. Findings from the analysis showed that the self-efficacy of studentteachers in student engagement (M=7.07, SD=.94), instructional strategies (M=7.4, SD=.91) and classroom management (M=7.2, SD=1.0) remained high. Outcomes from the t-test did not indicate significant differences between the male (M=7.03, SD=.930; M=7.3, SD=.836; M=7.17, SD=1.03) and female (M=7.09, SD=.953; M=7.46, SD=.945; M=7.2, SD=.996) PGDE student teachers in terms of student engagement, instructional strategies and classroom management. Findings from the one-way ANOVA showed a significant difference in student engagement based on the experience of teachers (F=3.4; df=3.471; p=.018). No significant differences among other groups based on the medium of instruction and qualifications of the studentteachers were found. Approximately 78% of the student-teachers stated that they developed the knowledge and skills related to self-efficacy from the various subjects of the PGDE programme. The study suggests several strategies which need to be incorporated in the PGDE programme to enhance the self-efficacy of student-teachers in their teaching-learning process.
