Fictional robots in literature and film have shaped our cultural image of robots. This paper stud... more Fictional robots in literature and film have shaped our cultural image of robots. This paper studies what these images can contribute to our relationship with the real robots that are now entering our everyday lives. A review of science fiction literature and films comes to the conclusion that the predominant theme of the fictional robotsmostly androids and replicantshas been human identity, not robotics itself. Nonhumanoid "just-robots" are presented as unproblematic sidekicks. It is argued that this focus has as consequence a tendency toward humanizing even non-humanoid robots in their presentation to the public. This tendency leads to a) breakdowns where technology contradicts the humanoid narrative, and b) a lack of productive narratives about emerging, more complex human-robot relationships.

As approaches based on the analysis of utterances' linguistic properties are not sufficient to identify all fictional character types, we develop an integrative approach that complements linguistic analysis with interactive and communication characteristics, and show that it can improve the identification performance. The interactive characteristics of fictional characters are captured by the descriptive analysis of semantic graphs weighted by linguistic markers of expressivity and social role. For this approach, we introduce a new data set of action movie character types with their corresponding sequences of dialogs. The evaluation results demonstrate that the integrated approach outperforms baseline approaches on the presented data set. Conversational robots and agents are being designed for educational and/or persuasive tasks, e.g.... more Conversational robots and agents are being designed for educational and/or persuasive tasks, e.g., health or fitness coaching. To pursue such tasks over a long time, they will need a complex model of the strategic goal, a variety of strategies to implement it in interaction, and the capability of strategic talk. Strategic talk is incipient ongoing conversation in which at least one participant has the objective of changing the other participant's attitudes or goals. The paper is based on the observation that strategic talk can stretch over considerable periods of time and a number of conversational segments. Film dialogues are taken as a source to develop a model of the strategic talk of mentor characters. A corpus of film mentor utterances is annotated on the basis of the model, and the data are interpreted to arrive at insights into mentor behavior, especially into the realization and sequencing of strategies.

The interest of this study lies in its design: the robotic interface setup is installed in the subjects' homes and video data are collected during ten days. This gives the rare opportunity to study the development of human-robot relationships over time, and the integration of companion technologies into everyday life. This paper outlines the qualitative inductive approach to data analysis, and discusses selected results. The focus here is on the interactional mechanisms of bringing conversations to an end. The paper distinguishes between "closing" as the conversational mechanism for doing this, and "closure" as the social norm that motivates it. We argue that this distinction is relevant for interaction designers insofar as they have to be aware of the compelling social norms that are invoked by a companion's conversational behaviour.

Abstract This paper outlines the introduction of computer technology in the Austrian IFF (Interun... more Abstract This paper outlines the introduction of computer technology in the Austrian IFF (Interuniversitaeres Forschungsinstitut fuer Fernstudien/Research Institute for study programs by correspondence and adult education). This institute was founded and is presided by several Austrian universities, but independent in its administration and research activities. Moreover, it consists of six relatively autonomous research departments and study centres all over Austria, each of them having its own research and educational priorities and its own management structure. The paper is concerned with the specific strategies of computer introduction in this university organization (e.g. user's participation, training methods,bottom-up-automation). It also deals with the conflicts and problems which have occurred since the beginning of computer implementation. The conflicts in particular illustrate clearly the role of the computer as a cataclyst for organisational problems within a management structure. The case study explores the question how the centralized introduction of computer technologies in a decentralized structure can be managed so as to develop and put into practice a viable concept of end user computing.

Robots and agents are becoming increasingly prominent in everyday life, taking on a variety of ro... more Robots and agents are becoming increasingly prominent in everyday life, taking on a variety of roles, including helpers, coaches, and even social companions. A core requirement for these social agents is the ability to establish and maintain long-term trusting and engaging relationship with their human users. Much research has already been done on the prerequisites for these types of social agents and robots, in affective computing, social computing and affective HCI. A number of disciplines within psychology and the social sciences are also relevant, contributing theories, data and methods relevant for the emerging areas of social robotics, and social computing in general. The complexity of the task of designing these social agents, and the diversity of the relevant disciplines can be overwhelming. This paper provides a summary of a special session at ACII 2009 whose purpose was to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in social agents and robots, and explore some of the fundamental questions regarding their development, and the evaluation of their effectiveness.

Facilitated open distance learning combines the flexibility of open learning with support of the learning process through local support centres. Following experiences with FACILE, European centres will form a network acting as a geographically separated virtual centre for continuing engineering education which will offer programmes for an audience located all over Europe.
