Sheffield Architecture

Here I wanted to share with you a little of the city I see from day to day. Over the past ten years or so, Sheffield has been going through a slow and steady regeneration which is by no means finished. Whereas old factories and chimneys used to dominate the, relatively low level, skyline, things are now starting to get a little more creative. Particularly with the expansion of the two universities.

Sheffield Forgemasters, Attercliffe Common, Sheffield - No collection of architecture in Sheffield would be complete without a reference to these bad boys that dominate the lower Don Valley. On a calm night you can hear the eerie sound of the the drop-forges echoing across the valley for several miles.
Aizelwood's Mill, Nursery Street, Sheffield - As seen from across the River Don, this is another of my most favourite buildings. The mill was built in 1861 on the site of the former nursery gardens of Sheffield Castle and alongside Sheffield's first railway, the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire line which carried grain from the cornfields of Lincolnshire. It was one of the first mills in Britain to use the iron roller reduction method of milling.
The Royal Exchange Buildings, Lady's Bridge, Sheffield - Built in 1900 by John Henry Bryars they originally housed a home for "the lost dogs of Sheffield" and a veterinary surgery for the working animals of early industrial Sheffield, particularly horses, for which there are ramps to every floor. This has always been one of my most favourite buildings in Sheffield.
Castle College, Sheffield - This building takes centre stage in the view from my workshop window, on the other side of the valley. It's at it's most beautiful in an evening when the sweeping, corrugated curve of the facade reflects the sunset.
Eyre Street Car Park, Sheffield, as seen from across Arundel Gate at night. Known locally as "The Borg".
