This strict social code combined with the rapid development of science and medicine made for a tense and often confusing environment. This tension, felt and observed by authors, frequently made its way into the books of the period in interesting ways. The Bedouin and the Arab - Khaldun and the Assimilation of a Great People

After centuries of being a proud, socially bound, nomadic group, the Bedouins are becoming the vi... more After centuries of being a proud, socially bound, nomadic group, the Bedouins are becoming the victims of their own asabiyah. While the Bedouin remain nomadic desert tribes with a centuries old code of behavior involving intermarriage among family members they will risk extinction. By becoming urbanized the Bedouin are finding a way to prolong their existence, but the price they are paying for that continuation is the loss of their culture. They are, in fact, being forced to emulate those around them, becoming more like modern Arabs and less like traditional Bedouins. Due to their own behavioral codes and the incursion of the modern world, the once great Bedouin people may no longer exist within a few more generations.

Due to the restrictions of length in this paper, I have decided to mainly explore only two of these elements, Humbaba, the demon guardian and Gugalana, the Great-Bull-of-Heaven. I also will slightly examine the role of the goddess Ishtar in her connection to the forest guardian Humbaba and ancient bird-snake goddesses.

Many cultures have some form of flood myth as part of their religious beliefs, but some of the mo... more Many cultures have some form of flood myth as part of their religious beliefs, but some of the most ancient of these are those of Mesopotamia and other early Middle Eastern civilizations, as well as certain Asian groups. It is possible that these myths have been passed down from their oldest form to the cultures of other groups such as those of the Chinese Miao. It could also be that the flood myths of each culture are actually based on a real catastrophic event that occurred at some point far in the past history of the world and each culture has passed the tale of this flood incident down through the generations.

Some people may have been taught in church that the women in The Holy Bible were insignificant, u... more Some people may have been taught in church that the women in The Holy Bible were insignificant, unnamed, or even responsible for all of humanity’s suffering and pain. But, this negative viewpoint is not the only way that biblical women should be seen as many of them, when really examined, are often very important and complicated people. One such woman is the young, Moabite widow, Ruth. Even though some rabbis may see Ruth as little more than a good person and her ‘book’ as nothing more than a curious, although beautiful, story that seems to be “out of place in the biblical corpus,” others have seen her as much more (Moore 212). To those who believe that Ruth’s story is an important inclusion to the Bible, it is a story about how a foreigner is not only blessed by “God’s chosen people,” but who also blesses them in a “profoundly important way” (Moore 206).

This Greek story, written by Aeschylus, follows the twisted and vengeful Atreus family. What makes this trilogy appalling and the Atreus family so dysfunctional is the outcome of the continuing blood feud among the descendents of King Tantalus. There are many horrible events that occur in The Oresteia Trilogy, but the most disturbing ones are those concerning human sacrifices, the murdering of children and even cannibalism.

It appears that humanity in the United States is starting to deteriorate quickly and people are b... more It appears that humanity in the United States is starting to deteriorate quickly and people are beginning to lose those qualities that make them human, such as empathy for their fellow man or woman. In his work titled The Theory of Moral Sentiment, Adam Smith writes that it is normal and natural for people to feel sympathy and pity for humans who are suffering or doing without, while also desiring revenge and punishment towards those people who have caused harm to others. Unfortunately, the progression of humanity today shows that we are starting to lose that particular balance between sympathy and vengeance that Smith writes about.

Anyone who has ever watched a movie set in the deserts of the Middle East has probably seen the e... more Anyone who has ever watched a movie set in the deserts of the Middle East has probably seen the exotic, but familiar representation of the area’s nomads. These nomads, known as Bedouins, are almost always shown in traditional dress and riding camels through the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert. While this image of the precarious lifestyle of the Bedouin may have been accurate at some point in time, with the incursion of modernity, expanding cities, and the complications of living such a close and isolated lifestyle, this nomadic group may be slowly slipping into the annals of time.

Emile Durkheim’s work concerning suicide brought forth many theories regarding the role of societ... more Emile Durkheim’s work concerning suicide brought forth many theories regarding the role of society in an individual’s choice to take their own life. According to Durkheim, there are several types of suicide some of which are brought about by a person’s over integration into their society and culture, while others are initiated by social isolation. While young adults were one of the groups identified by Durkheim to be at risk for taking their own lives, children and teenagers were one of the groups that had a low suicide rate (Durkheim Kindle PC location 203). This is something that has changed today and there appears to be an unusually rapid proliferation in suicides in children and teenagers over the last few decades (“About Teen”). By identifying the type of suicide that these young people are committing it may be possible to find the cause for such an increase and implement the necessary procedures to help prevent these unnecessary deaths.
