Angela Duckworth on Passion, Grit and Success (Published 2016)
One key article that I came across this semester spoke on the importance of 'grit'. Grit is a combination of passion and perseverance. I have a grit for problem solving that will hopefully translate into success in banking. This semester I was able to work on my problem solving grit through through various new projects scenarios. Once grit is established, work becomes more of a passion than a job. Jean Basquiat's quote speaks to the importance of losing yourself in what you are doing.
Is Diversity Good For Business?
Diversity and inclusion is a key component for success in business. It is hard for a company to be competitive in a global market when the orientation of their workforce is less than global. This article speaks on the industry wide effort to match this call to action. Companies realize that it is not just employees who want to see diversity, it is customers as well. Strategic change towards D&I will go a long way in retaining key customer relationships and promoting a positive employee culture.
What Is Leadership, Anyway?
Leadership may be, by its nature, an anxious and inconstant idea. "Like “status” or “alienation,” the word “leadership” points not toward a stable concept but toward a problem or affliction unique to modernity." Is too much emphasis placed on 'lionizing' leaders? I believe the role of the modern day leader is fast changing. I've found this evident in the various team projects I've been working in over the past four years. Often times, a collective leadership effort has been more effective.
The Most Important Leadership Competencies, According to Leaders Around the World
It is no surprise that a recent HBR study found that the most important qualities for global leaders are 'strong ethics & safety', 'self-organizing', and 'efficient learning'. Personally, the most important to me is a leaders ability to provide goals and objectives with loose guidelines. This leadership quality helped us achieve our team goals through inhibiting an inclusive, creative culture within our team.
A tree is a great metaphor for the leadership growth I experienced this semester. Our team weathered various challenges throughout the semester. As team leader, I was responsible for being the go-to person when we needed answers. I had to have a deeply rooted foundation in the business policy course, deadlines, blackboard, and team progress. Only with that root, would we be able to grow in the right direction. I plan to use this same foundation in my next career endeavors.
Our team did not get off to a great start this semester. We missed deadlines, confused directions, and didn't communicate well. After a few bad grades, we could have easily thrown in the towel. However, we regrouped and through tracking our planned steps, were able to pinpoint fixable errors. By Presentation 2, our team was working on "Plan Z".
In my AAU basketball days, I idolized #8 on the Los Angeles Lakers as if he was a god. I remember vividly how hard I would work to watch watch his games as kid, from negotiating with my parents to stay up late on a school night to sneaking down to the basement once ‘the coast was clear’. At that stage in my life I admired him for his effortlessness on the court.
One game to go for Kobe Bryant, who scores 13 in final road contest
The real work that Kobe has achieved is persistence, constantly coming back to compete season after season. As I work towards taking the first step in my career, I do so with the intent upon being in the game for the long-term. Kobe’s quote, which came after one of the final games in his illustrious 20-year NBA career, sheds light on the motivation and hunger one must have to come back better than you were in the previous season. Mirroring Kobe, I aspire for a decorated career in business.
Over the course of my life I have found that our habits ultimately grow to form our character. In fact, this year I was able to pick up a habit that has been key to achieving my professional goals – reading more financial news. In reading WSJ, Bloomberg, and other market sources, with the same passion that I once had for sports news, I have worked towards becoming better prepared for a career in banking.
After minor organizational changes at the start of the semester I was elected Section 2 Team 1 group leader. This afforded me the opportunity to test my leadership ability in a high stakes situation. Our team was comprised of five Seniors intent on passing the course. I quickly sought to translate our teams ‘equal stake’ mindset to my leadership style. Utilizing this quote, I was able to achieve both the team goal of high achievement and my personal goal which was to prepare for business.
“We all know that if you swing for the fences, you’re going to strike out a lot, but you’re also going to hit some home runs” - Jeff Bezos. At the business plate runs and returns are not confined to a set ceiling, unlike baseball where the most runs you can score while at bat is capped at four. This quote matches with the problem solving goals I aspire to achieve in business. I make a conscious effort to not limit possibilities and outcomes based on previous experiences.
When we get too comfortable in our present situation it is easy to pass on new opportunities and challenges. Musk and this quote were a major motivation in my decision to change my major from Economics to Business Administration (Accounting). Sophomore year, I was inspired by the Tesla CEO to divert from the traditional Economics track and enroll in the Principles of Accounting I course. In overcoming my fear of new arenas I was able to realize achieve my problem solving goals.
Morehouse has also acted as a professional pipeline, preparing me for real-work and internship experiences. The combination of rigorous coursework and work experience taught me how to apply my love for math and problem solving to finance/business scenarios. In this visual discovery tool, I hope to reveal a personal collection of useful, goal-seeking advice that has served as a daily inspiration in my life.
I would like to first thank Morehouse College for shaping my personal values and goals. It has truly been humbling to be around such an intelligent group of leaders who I can proudly call brothers. These men, as well as faculty and advisors, have taught me countless lessons that have laid the foundation for my perception of the duty of leadership, trust, family, and integrity.
