The itinerary of Bernard Rhodes S. J. (1646-1715), temporal coadjutor of the Society of Jesus and... more The itinerary of Bernard Rhodes S. J. (1646-1715), temporal coadjutor of the Society of Jesus and missionary in China, is of remarkable complexity. He was already a doctor before he was recruited by the Jesuit order and sent on various missions. During the nine years before his arrival in China, his route between Europe and Asia was largely determined by rivalries between European powers. When he eventually arrived in Beijing in 1699 and entered the service of the Kangxi Emperor, he became attached to the Imperial House, and this seems to have decisively determined the course of his itineraries in the Middle Kingdom henceforth. Following his movements in the capital and in the emperor's cortege during imperial tours gives us unique insights into the mobility of this Jesuit medical practitioner. In the service of the Manchu rule, he provided therapies-unknown to Chinese palace physicians and their medical traditions-to privileged patients belonging to the core imperial networks. ...

In this article I shall concentrate on Antoine Thomas' illness and death (July 28, 1709) in Pekin... more In this article I shall concentrate on Antoine Thomas' illness and death (July 28, 1709) in Peking. This will serve as a case study to elucidate certain aspects of the role played by Jesuit medicine, i.e. Jesuit physicians and Jesuit drugs, at the court of the Kangxi emperor (r. 1662-1722), the first of the three great rulers of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). As a first step the network of power, as reflected in the so-called medical palace memorials, will be presented in order to arrive at a more comprehensive evaluation of the medical involvement of the Jesuits, as practising physicians, suppliers of foreign drugs and as patients. It will be shown that the circumstances of Thomas' illness and death must be based on a political and social analysis of the role of court medicine as patronised by the Kangxi emperor. Isidoro Lucci S.J. (1661-1719) and João Baptista Lima (1659-1733) at the Qing Court : The Physician, the Barber-surgeon, and the Padroado's Interests in China

"This article provides a detailed account of the life and work of Isidoro Lucci S.J. and Joã... more "This article provides a detailed account of the life and work of Isidoro Lucci S.J. and João Baptista Lima at the imperial court in late 17th-century China. Lucci, accompanied by the barber-surgeon and Macaense-born Lima, was the first professional Jesuit physician to arrive in Peking in response to a special request of the Kangxi emperor. First, their complex travel route until their arrival in Peking will be highlighted, as well as how their stay in the Chinese capital gave rise to a conflict within the Jesuit China Mission due to competing interests between Padroado members and the Mathématiciens du Roi. Second, the medical activities of Lucci and Lima at the court in Peking and on imperial tours will be depicted, including their conflicts with Chinese palace physicians. Moreover, it will be shown that caring for elite patients, among them the ‘Son of Heaven’ suffering from diseases and thus being subjected to the crude methods of contemporary European medicine, moved them far away from the ideal of charitable physicians. Eventually, the causes will be examined that brought the stay of Lucci and Lima in Peking to an abrupt end, being triggered by a combination of political, religious and medical factors working against them. *** Este artículo proporciona un detallado relato de la vida y obra de Isidoro Lucci S.J. y João Baptista Lima en la corte imperial China de finales del siglo XVII. Lucci, acompañado por el sangrador macaense Lima, fue el primer jesuita profesional de la medicina enviado a Pekín en respuesta a la petición expresa del emperador Kangxi. Primero destacaremos la complejidad de su ruta de viaje hasta su llegada a Pekín, así como analizaremos su controvertida estancia en la capital la cual evidenció los intereses enfrentados entre la facción jesuita de los Mathématiciens du Roi y la del Padroado. This work investigates the exchange of medical ideas and practices between China and the West dur... more This work investigates the exchange of medical ideas and practices between China and the West during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century within the context of the French Jesuit Mission sent to the court of the Emperor Kangxi (r. 1661-17 22). The main actors in this historical process were members of the Jesuit mission sent to the Middle Kingdom by Louis XIV, the Sun King, on the one hand, and the court-centered Chinese power circle with the Kangxi emperor, the Sun of Heaven, as the main actor at its top on the other. Part I provides an introduction to the role of medicine in Church legislation, thus elucidating the legal and ecclesiastical background on which the China-bound Jesuits operated. This is then followed by Part II in which I analyze the importance of medicine in imperial communication, control and power relations and the active role of the Emperor in conferring medical advise and graciously bestowing rare, efficacious and even supernatural drugs and recipes ...
