Mandarin duck:British bird series.

The male Mandarin is very distinctive and very colourful, female is more brown and greyish, but the eye stripe gives it distinction. Nests in tree cavities or holes near water. found on rivers, lakes and ponds. 9-12 eggs are laid, white. Feeds on vegitation, seeds, insects and molluscs. They are very warey easily spooked, often perching on logs under reeds. Said to be more in the south of Britain but spreading, originated from Aisia.

While walking the canal today we spotted a female Mandarin duck on the fence with her young below her.
