Philip II (r. 1556-98) was Titian´s most important patron, and together they forged one of the most fruitful artistic relationships of the European Renaissance. Philip surpassed all of the Venetian painter´s previous patrons both in the number of commissions and in their variety.

Philip II of Spain, was an absolute monarch meaning that he had power over everything. Philip was a very dedicated king, he did not joust nor hunted. He isolated himself and gave his full devotion to the government.

Philip succeeded his father as king of Spain, which at the time also encompassed the Burgundian patrimony, domains in Italy and, as of 1580, also Portugal, together with the colonies of the two Iberian states. The power of Spain came to its peak under his reign: the epoch is thus known as the siglo d’oro, the Golden Age, which lasted until the late seventeenth century.

Back then people had a unique sense of style. They wore armorish types of clothing.
