In Central Europe, early medieval fortified site research has been an essential topic for several generations. However, gradual changes in the landscape are a threat to these cultural heritage monuments. The main task of this paper was to compare the previous results from archaeological excavations with new data acquired by geophysical methods. The presented study is based on the three methods widely used in archaeology: magnetometry, ground-penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity tomography. New surveys provide information about the internal structure and the state of preservation of the fortifications in a non-destructive way. Comparison of the results encourages the evaluation of archaeological excavation and helps determine the suitability and effectiveness of geophysical methods in specific natural conditions.

These include early medieval centres which mirror the political and socioeconomic relationships, reflecting the changes of their time. zalavár-vársziget is undoubtedly one of the most important fortified sites in central europe in the early Middle ages. its short-lived existence from the 840s to the beginning of the 10 th c. perfectly illustrates the rise and fall of carolingian power in Pannonia. it was a place where important people of that time, including Pribina, kocel, Methodius, and arnulf, lived and worked. its repeated occurrence in written historical sources also points to its significance. in these sources, it appears under various names, but especially as Mosaburg. Systematic archaeological excavation of the site has been conducted for approximately 70 years. Within the last decade, geophysical surveys followed field research. By comparing previous knowledge and new results from the geophysical prospection, we were able to, with the help of statistics and spatial analyses, evaluate the similarities and differences between the central area and its surroundings, identifying the basic characteristics of the individual parts of the site.

The site functioned as a local administrative and economic centre from about the middle of the 11th century to the end of the 12th century. In written historical sources it was known as Strachotíngrad (“Castrum Strachotín”). Between 1948 and 1986, several minor archaeological excavations were made at this site. Our work’s purpose was to gain new knowledge by deploying proven geophysical prospecting methods in archaeology. The first two of these methods, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Groundpenetrating radar (GPR) focused on the rampart. Within the third used method – magnetometry, we focused on the prospection of the inner area of the hillfort. Based on the results, it was possible to identify some of the construction features of the fortification and locate the course of the no longer existing ...

From 2011 to 2014, a team of geophysicists from the Masaryk University has conducted here four survey campaigns in total. Almost 20 ha were surveyed from which about 80 % fall within magnetic survey and 20 % within GPR survey. Following the results of magnetic survey it was possible to verify the position of individual features captured in the more than 100 years old archaeological plan and locate other, still unknown structures. Several stone buildings were discovered at the location of Le Parc aux Chevaux. An ideal example for research into Roman architecture is villa PC2.

The need for an effective management, preparation and execution of the archaeological excavation in an overload time schedule, where human resources are a bigger issue than a financial one, have led to growing interest in archaeogeophysical prospection. Within last year Department of Archaeology and Museology at Masaryk University Brno made several of advance geophysical prospection surveys in the Czech Republic. Surveys carried out in cooperation with contract archaeological companies as well as road authorities clearly demonstrate the advantages of archaeogeophysical prospection conducted prior to the excavation itself. These surveys have significantly helped both field archaeologists as well as investors to plan archaeological excavation and construction work in advance and to...
