A narrative approach was presented as a training course in order to improve the professionalism of medical interns in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. The aim of this study was to describe the optimization strategies for presenting a narrative medicine educational program. Methods : This study was conducted qualitatively and with inductive approach in 1399. Medical interns participating in the first course of narrative medicine, including 18 people, were included in the study by purposive sampling. In-depth semi-structured and individual interviews were conducted and data were analyzed using MAXQDA10 software. Results : Participants included 18 medical interns (10 males and 8 females) with a mean age of 25±0.38. A total of 417 codes were extracted. The optimization strategies included 3 main categories and 6 sub-categories including pre-training predictions ...

Intestinal pathogen and even non-pathogen protozoa consider as major causes of disease in patients with gastrointestinal problems. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of intestinal protozoan infection in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) in Isfahan, Iran. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study carried out from 2013 to 2018 in Isfahan, Iran. One thousand nine hundred and sixty-five samples of feces from patients with UC collected and each sample examined using direct wet mounting with normal saline and iodine and sedimentation tests such as formol-ethyl acetate concentration and trichrome-staining methods. Results: From 655 patients, 185 (28.2%) infected with Giardia lamblia followed by Blastocystis hominis (27.3%), Endolimax nana (14....

This study aimed to investigate Iranian medical students’ perceptions of the first NM program offered in 2019. The study was conducted on 69 medical interns who participated in the weekly NM program that was part of the professional ethics course for two months. We used a questionnaire to determine medical interns' perceptions and personal attitudes toward NM. Three experts confirmed the validity of the questionnaire in Persian, and its reliability was verified by internal consistency (α = 0.879). The independent t-test was used to compare the differences in the total scores of students' perceptions. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 23 software (P < 0.05). The response rate to the questionnaire was 95.65%. The results showed overall students' perceptions of the program were found to be positive. Furthermore, the scores showed a significan...

One of the methods for teaching reflection is “reflective writing” that is conducted in “reflective practice.” Some tools have been developed to assess “reflective capacity,” and The Reflection Evaluation for Learners’ Enhanced Competencies Tool (REFLECT) is one of them. AIMS: This study aimed to adapt the REFLECT rubric in Persian. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This quantitative study was conducted in a medical school with the participation of medical interns through census sampling, and in three stages, including translation, pilot study, and main study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Persian translation was obtained by the “forward/backward translation” method. We made some changes in the tool and used it in the pilot and main study to confirm validity and reliability. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Pearson correlation, and...

Aim: This study aimed to determine the methodological quality of CPGs about cancer-related fatigue management using the AGREE II instrument. Method: This study involved a systematic search, followed by a descriptive study, to evaluate the methodological quality of CPGs about CRF using the AGREE II instrument in 2018. A comprehensive search was conducted on different websites and databases to find the eligible published guidelines from the observation time to Jan 2018. After screening the guidelines based on eligibility criteria, the selected CPGs were assessed by five independent appraisers by means of the updated AGREE II instrument developed in 2013. Results: According to the results, applicability and editorial independence domains had obtained low quality scores. However, the scores of the rest of the domains were indicative of a favorable qualit...

Oncologists play a central role in their supportive treatment. This study aims to describe Iranian oncologists' perceptions in terms of priorities in supportive care needs for nonmetastatic cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: We conducted this study using a descriptive, exploratory qualitative approach with a purposive sampling method. Interviews were conducted from July to October 2016 with medical oncologists (mean age: 47.5 years) who had a mean work experience of 15.8 years. Data saturation was achieved with 15 participants. Interviews were semi-structured. Graneheim and Lundman’s qualitative content analysis approach and MAXQDA software were used to analyze the data. Results: There were two main categories obtained from data analysis: 1. continued comprehensive support in the disease continuum from diagnosis to rehabilitation (education and consultation, social and treatment support for patien...

Treatment options for IBS have increased in number in the past decade, and clinicians should not be limited to use only conventional treatments to cure it. This article is a placebo-controlled clinical trial to assess the therapeutic effects of low-dose bismuth subcitrate on symptoms and the health-related quality of life in adult patients with IBS. Methods: This clinical trial was done during July 2015 to January 2016 in Isfahan, Iran. For each of three subtypes (IBS-constipation dominant, IBS-diarrhea dominant [IBS-D], and IBS-mixed), we included patients with IBS aged 18–70 years, diagnosed according to the Rome III criteria. In this study, 129 eligible patients were enrolled, of which 119 continued on the protocol to the end of study. They were allocated in placebo group (Group A) and int...

Given the need to eliminate the educational gap and provide optimal conditions, educational interventions regarding morning reports are often implemented in the form of evidence-based morning reports with an interactive and consultative approach. Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the quality of evidence-based morning reports using an interactive and consultative approach. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted with an inductive approach in 2019 in Iran. Changes were made to develop an evidence-based morning report and create a friendly educational environment between faculty members and residents, as well as interactive learning among the residents. The intervention was assessed through explaining the experiences of 16 participants via individual semi-structured interviews. Purpos...

Given the cultural, social, and economic differences, in every health care system, there are increasing needs for the adapted versions of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). This study aimed to introduce an innovative CPG adaptation approach for nurses working in a developing country. Methods: This study is comprised of three sections: a. An extensive systematic search of the literature, b. The adaptation process, c. Interviews, which were held with stakeholders, users and/or the target population. We applied all of the stages of guideline adaptation process according to Adaptation Resource Toolkit, with the integration of the findings of a systematic literature search and a qualitative content analysis in an "adolopted" new CPG. Results: In this study, we applied a mix of three methods namely adoption, adaptation and development (adolopment) of recommendations to save time, cost, and manpower efficiently. Moreover, we integrated the utilized qualitative research method and literature review with the adolopment approach to develop the recommendations. Conclusion: Given there is a paucity of nursing clinical practice guidelines (NCPGs) in the nursing management of cancer therapy-induced mucositis and to save time and costs, the findings emerging from the adoption, adaptation, and de novo guideline development by a panel of experts and qualitative content analysis (QCA) method were integrated to achieve a more comprehensive nursing practice guideline.

In the current study, we clarified the magnitude of joint interdependence (co-morbidity) of anxiety (continuous) and Psychological stress (dichotomous) as dependent variables of mixed type with five-factor personality traits as independent variables. Data from 3180 participants who attended in the cross-sectional population-based "study on the epidemiology of psychological, alimentary health and nutrition" and completed self-administered questionnaires about demographic and life style, gastrointestinal disorders, personality traits, perceived intensity of stress, social support, and psychological outcome was analyzed using shared random effect approach in R Free software. The results indicated high scores of neuroticism increase the chance of high psychological stress (odds ratio [OR] = 5...
