I have worked as a ceramics specialist for the Museum of London for over 35 years, with a particular interest in medieval and later pottery and clay tobacco pipes. Since 2001 I have taught numerous courses on post-excavation procedures and archaeological publication as a sessional lecturer for Birkbeck College, University of London. Since 2009 I have also taught a post-excavation course for Hendon and District Archaeological Society in north London. I served as Assistant Editor and then Co-Editor of Medieval Ceramics for 10 years, and have been Joint Editor of Post-Medieval Archaeology from 2009 to 2014.

Stratford High Street, London E15, found evidence for Saynes Mill, a tide powered grain mill of m... more Stratford High Street, London E15, found evidence for Saynes Mill, a tide powered grain mill of medieval origin, converted in 1745-62 into a pumping station for the West Ham Water Company with an engine installed by John Smeaton. The large-scale reconstruction meant that there was limited survival of earlier buildings, but many later structures survived almost intact and stretches of the quays that fl anked the Waterworks River were also recorded. The excavated remains of both the buildings and revetments spanned the period from the late 15th to the late 19th centuries.

A detailed examination of an assemblage of pottery deposited during the last quarter of the 17th ... more A detailed examination of an assemblage of pottery deposited during the last quarter of the 17th century at Bombay Wharf, in Rotherhithe, London, provides the opportunity to look at the wider context of painted earthenwares made at selected centres on the Continent and found in London. The Rotherhithe material includes a high proportion of imported pottery, with fi ne examples of Portuguese faience, Ligurian maiolica and Dutch tin-glazed ware. The wider distribution of these wares in London is considered, as well as questions of the original context in which they appeared and the circumstances of their disposal. THE SITE Evaluation and excavation were carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) at Bombay Wharf, in Rotherhithe, SE16, in 2001-02, as part of a wider investigation, in advance of development, of an area including Ceylon Wharf, East India Wharf and 101-105 Rotherhithe Street (Fig. 1). 1 The site is situated between St Mary Church Street and Rotherhithe Street (NGR 535100 179800). Work included two phases of evaluation trenches and two excavation trenches. The fi nds discussed here come principally from the 2002 excavations. The site lies on river alluvium over Thames terrace gravels forming Rotherhithe Eyot, an area from which considerable evidence for prehistoric activity has been recovered. 2 From the 14th century Rotherhithe was associated with shipbuilding and repair, and with allied trades into the 19th century. Finds of late 13th-to 15th-century pottery were recovered from evaluation trenches at Ceylon Wharf in 2001, and at Bombay Wharf, although these are not discussed here. Towards the end of

SUMMARY: Archaeological excavations in Southwark over the past 50 years have proved to be a very ... more SUMMARY: Archaeological excavations in Southwark over the past 50 years have proved to be a very prolific source of evidence for the material culture of people living in this part of London from the 16th century onwards. This lecture, the fourth held by SPMA in honour of the late Geoff Egan, focuses on a remarkably rich and varied assemblage of 17th- and 18th-century artefacts excavated on a site in Tanner Street in 2012. Covering a wide spectrum of activities, occupations and levels of society, these include ceramics, glass, clay tobacco pipes, pewter, copper-alloy, wood, leather, bone and ivory, with objects as diverse as cloth seals, spoons, book mounts, wine bottles and glasses, bird feeders and a mallet for playing pall mall, and sources ranging from the English Midlands to the Far East.

Summary: Archaeological excavations on the site of Oxford’s first ‘modern’ hospital, the Radcliff... more Summary: Archaeological excavations on the site of Oxford’s first ‘modern’ hospital, the Radcliffe Infirmary, uncovered evidence for its use after its completion in 1770 and subsequent 19th-century expansions. Providing insights into the ancillary buildings, drainage and water supply structures located to the rear of the Infirmary, among the features excavated was a stone-built soakaway serving the first laundry complex. Upon the building being rebuilt as a fever ward in 1824, the soakaway became a receptacle for unwanted pottery, glass and other finds. The composition of this assemblage provides a glimpse of the material culture of a hospital during this period.

GOLDFINGER (Bruxelles) SUM M ARY The thermal réaction of N-chlorosuccinimide with toluène has been investigated and an atomic and free radical mechanism for the reactions of N-haloimides in non-polar média proposed. Because of the small steric factors of reactions between polyatomic particles, thèse reagents do not react directly, but act as a source of molecular halogen, which by an atomic mechanism leads to the observed reactions. ïhis explains the long induction period, followed by a rapid reaction, the accelerating effect of HCl and HgO and the inhibition by Og. It accounts also for the well-known specificity of compounds of this type to substitute in a to a double bond. I.

These provided food, drink, entertainment and regular meeting places for figures from the worlds of literature, science and art. Selected assemblages of artefacts including pottery, clay pipes and glass, as well as environmental remains, may relate to these establishments and help evoke the character of the area. One of the most remarkable finds is a delftware phallic drinking vessel, unparalleled in archaeological contexts.
