The selection of the appropriate methodology is a matter of the required results and is very dependent on data availability. In fact, data availability is the crucial parameter especially when working in ungauged basins or ephemeral streams. The goal of this chapter is to evaluate methodologies used to floodplain modeling in small watersheds. An overview of the principal models used in floodplain modeling is presented here in terms of their relative advantages as compared to each other. The chapter provides the results obtained with different models applied to a small watershed situated in the Romania and concludes with a discussion about the various recommendations and solutions on flood modeling methodology.

This study examines the mortar materials used in the construction of the walls at the Archaeologi... more This study examines the mortar materials used in the construction of the walls at the Archaeological Roman Fortification site (Ovidiu, Romania) on the shore of Siutghiol Lake. Several analyses were conducted to determine the mortars’ basic physical properties, mineralogical composition, and microstructural characteristics in order to describe the mortars used in the construction of the Roman fortress. The investigation utilized X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDAX), and differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). The results indicated that siliceous aggregates and lime binders were used in the production of the studied mortars, the structure was constructed in the sixth century, and the raw materials used to construct the site are of local origin. The physically-based model TOPOG was tested at a sub-daily time step for the Voinesti catchment, a small watershed located at the western end of the Curving Sub-Carpathian Mountains. An analysis of the basin behaviour, as well as an evaluation of the model performance, was performed, and a practical gauging procedure was designed in accordance with the need of using the model under this type of circumstances (small basin, no sophisticated gauging). The importance of such a gauging procedure lies in the perspective of using the once-gauged model for flash-flood warning systems in this type of basins

The aim of this paper is to analyze the level of implementation of said system in Europe and Romania and the analysis of the flash flood occurrence, specifically in the Dobrogea region of Romania.

Mapping tree species composition in a Caspian temperate mixed forest based on spectral-temporal metrics and machine learning

The tree species composition (TSC) reflects a forest's tree species diversity and is relevant for... more The tree species composition (TSC) reflects a forest's tree species diversity and is relevant for forest planning, biodiversity conservation, and forest resources management. Yet, accurate information on tree species composition at landscape scale is largely missing, especially for mixed forests and remote areas. One reason being that mapping tree species is time-consuming, and costly, especially in mixed forests and remote areas. Here we develop a robust method for mapping TSC in a mixed temperate forest. Based on forest inventory plots and considering the frequency of dominant tree species in the inventory dataset, five species groups were defined: pure oriental beech, mixed oriental beech, pure common hornbeam, mixed common hornbeam, and mixed deciduous. The classification is based on three-year time series data of Landsat-8 (L8) and Sentinel-2 (S2) derived spectral-temporal features (STMs) and vegetation indices within the long-term, seasonal, and monthly time scales. Model performances of three Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Classification and Regression Tree (CART) were compared and revealed different classification accuracies (overall accuracies (OAs) between ~ 70 % and 86 %). Highest OA was obtained using SVM regardless of the classification dataset (STMs and satellite time series). The comparisons between different time scales indicated that with both L8 and S2 time series the seasonal STMs produced higher accuracies than monthly and long-term STMs with S2 outperforming L8 across all time scales and with all tested ML algorithms. We conclude that the freely available satellite time series, spectral-temporal features, and ML algorithms are favourable for accurate TSC mapping.

The decision to efficiently allocate water resources should be made quickly, based on tools that provide correct information with a low computational effort. Therefore, we propose a new user-friendly tool—IrrigTool—for assessing the irrigation rate considering the precipitation, temperature, evapotranspiration, soil type, and crop. IrrigTool implements the Thornthwaite equations and can be used to identify weakness due to drought stress and as an educational tool. Apart from the computation, it provides a graphical representation of the results and possible comparisons of the output for two locations. The application is built in Microsoft Excel for graphics and Visual Basic VBA. The user does not have programming knowledge to use it. This paper present a GIS based landslide susceptibility assessment. This model is applied on the Littoral Coast line from Constanta to 2 Mai village, which is about 50 km along the Black Sea coast, crossing the Danube – Black Sea Channel at Agigea and passing through several resorts – Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud, Techirghiol, Costinesti and Mangalia. The data used are: geological map (lithology per geologic group), topographic maps of relevant scale to define slope angle (β), and some geotechnical parameters per geological group. GPR uses the electromagnetic method related the high-frequency pulse that used widely in various field. The experimental study focused on the investigation of the landslide in the road by GPR method with antenna 200 MHz. The landslides become serious problems and required various technique and methods to investigate it in several places. GPR measurements present a useful technique for studies and investigation of the problem. The GPR can be categorized in the first place as an experimental method surveys landslide depths were recognized at 1-10 m below the natural terrain level. The results obtained revealed the causes of landslides on the road.

This paper present a GIS based landslide susceptibility assessment. This model is applied on the Littoral Coast line from Constanta to 2 Mai village, which is about 50 km along the Black Sea coast, crossing the Danube – Black Sea Channel at Agigea and passing through several resorts – Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud, Techirghiol, Costinesti and Mangalia. The data used are: geological map (lithology per geologic group), topographic maps of relevant scale to define slope angle (β), and some geotechnical parameters per geological group. For each of them a GIS map was produced. The aim of this work is to study and explore the causes of the landslide in different locations u... more The aim of this work is to study and explore the causes of the landslide in different locations using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology. GPR uses the electromagnetic method related the high-frequency pulse that used widely in various field. The experimental study focused on the investigation of the landslide in the road by GPR method with antenna 200 MHz. The landslides become serious problems and required various technique and methods to investigate it in several places. GPR measurements present a useful technique for studies and investigation of the problem. The GPR can be categorized in the first place as an experimental method surveys landslide depths were recognized at 1-10 m below the natural terrain level. The results obtained revealed the causes of landslides on the road.
